The oil, which is produced from the blossom of the cananga plant, is primarily used as an ingredient in food and cosmetics. Cananga oil has no medical applications. In foodstuffs, cananga oil is used as a flavoring agent in puddings and drinks.

In cosmetics, cananga oil is used as a fragrance. Cananga oil should not be confused with ylang-ylang oil, which is produced from Canangium odorata genuina.
