Clear protein powder is a whey protein isolate that dissolves clear in cold water instead of binding creamy. What ends up in your shaker is a protein lemonade with 24.3 to 25.2 g of protein per serving, not a milkshake. It is made for everyone who finds a creamy shake too heavy and still wants to keep an eye on their protein intake.

We stock several brands for this, all based on whey protein isolate with 81 to 84 g of protein per 100 g. Which one is best for you comes down to three questions: how much choice you want in flavours, which container size suits your consumption, and whether the sweetener matters to you.

    What is clear protein?

Clear protein is a protein powder made from highly purified whey protein isolate that stays clear when mixed and delivers 24.3 to 25.2 g of protein per 30 g serving. This is possible thanks to the combination of filtration and an acidifier: the isolate is stripped of fat and milk sugar, citric acid lowers the pH value, and the water no longer turns cloudy. Because the isolate has most of its lactose filtered out, a protein drink like this is naturally low in lactose.

    Difference from conventional protein powder

The difference from classic protein shakes is first of all one of texture. A regular whey protein binds creamy and sits heavy in your stomach, a protein lemonade drinks thin and cool like a juice. The nutritional values are close together: one serving here comes to around 103 calories, with 0.2 g of sugar and less than 0.1 g of fat.

What clear protein is good for

It fits into a protein-rich diet, works as a thirst quencher in hot weather and can also be used as the base for drinks such as iced tea or lemonade. You will find the full comparison of the production stages in our guide to whey protein and whey isolate.

Clear protein or clear whey protein: what is the difference?

In practice both mean the same product, just with a different word. Clear whey emphasises whey as the protein source, clear protein the product category, and in the trade you will also come across clear iso, iso clear, whey isolate clear and protein powder clear. Clear whey protein isolate and protein lemonade describe the same protein drink as well.

There is one real difference, though, and it matters: some suppliers sell a plant-based powder made from pea protein under the clear protein label. Here, every item in this category is whey protein isolate, so a dairy product. You will not find a vegan clear protein here, plant-based alternatives are in the vegan protein collection. If you are specifically looking for whey you are in the right place, and the matching neighbours are whey protein and whey protein isolate.

Which clear protein powder suits you?

    The brands compared

The brands differ less in protein content than in choice, container size and sweetening. So here are all the nutritional values side by side, with the ranges across all flavours instead of one flattering single figure.

    BrandContainerProtein per 100 gSweetener
GN Laboratories Hydro Clear750 g81.0 to 84.0 gsucralose, with acesulfame K added in some flavours
Gods Rage Viking Clear750 g81.8 to 83.4 gsucralose
Big Zone Clear Whey Protein Juice1000 g77.8 to 83.0 gsucralose

    Scitec Iso Whey Clear1025 g20 g per serving (25 g)sucralose and acesulfame K

    Recommendation by need

The widest choice of flavours in this category comes with the Hydro Clear Whey Isolate. If you want a kilo in the house, go for the Clear Whey Protein Juice with 1000 g or the Iso Whey Clear with 1025 g. And if you are after 750 g with a consistently high protein content, the Viking Clear Isolate is worth it: its protein content goes up to 83.4 g per 100 g.

Preparation: how does clear whey protein turn out properly clear?

    Dosage

Take 30 g of powder to 300 to 400 ml of cold water and shake it in a shaker, not in a blender. The colder the water, the clearer and more refreshing the lemonade turns out.

    Why it foams

It foams right after shaking. That comes from the missing fat and from the acidifier: both lower the surface tension, and the air stays in the drink for a moment. Let the shaker stand for 30 to 60 seconds and the foam collapses.

    Variations for everyday use

Two ice cubes turn it into a thirst quencher for hot days, and around training a clear protein drink goes down far more easily than a heavy shake. Because the powder is made for water and not for milk, it also works as a base for homemade iced tea. There is more on this in our article about whey isolate as a drink.

Buying clear protein at a good price: what to look at

Prices only become comparable through the base price per kilo, and you will find that price on every item in the overview. The reason is simple: containers range from 500 g to 1025 g, and a low total price often means a higher price per kilo with a small pack. Comparing prices across pack sizes is therefore misleading.

The second value that counts on price is the protein content per 100 g. Between 77.8 and 84.0 g there are a good six percentage points, and they help decide how much of the powder is actually protein. Anyone who calculates both together, price per kilo and protein content, ends up buying not the cheapest but the best value clear protein powder for their goals.

Frequently asked questions about clear protein powder

What is the difference between clear whey and classic whey protein?

The texture. Clear whey dissolves clear and thin, classic whey protein binds creamy like a milkshake. In protein per serving there is little between them, which is why the choice is mostly a question of taste and situation.

How much protein is in one serving?

With the 750 g and 1000 g items it is 24.3 to 25.2 g of protein per 30 g serving. The Iso Whey Clear from Scitec works with 25 g of powder and comes to 20 g of protein.

Why does clear whey protein foam so strongly?

Because it contains hardly any fat and acidifiers lower the surface tension. The foam is a sign of a cleanly purified isolate and disappears by itself after 30 to 60 seconds.

    Which sweeteners are used?

Every flavour contains sucralose. Some flavours of the Hydro Clear also contain acesulfame K, as does the Iso Whey Clear. We do not currently stock an unflavoured version without sweeteners.

Is clear whey also available in 1 kg?

Yes. The Clear Whey Protein Juice comes with 1000 g, the Iso Whey Clear with 1025 g. The other items come in 750 g and 500 g.

What are the everyday benefits of a protein lemonade?

It is easy to drink when a creamy shake feels too heavy, and you can take it with you chilled anywhere. For your body it is the same protein source as classic whey, just in a different form.

Can I mix clear protein with other drinks?

With water it turns out clearest. With cold, unsweetened tea it works well too. Milk does not suit it, because the clear texture is then lost.
