Maltodextrin
Whether for an instant energy boost for endurance athletes or as an essential building block in the post-workout shake for bodybuilding: Maltodextrin powder is the gold standard among complex carbohydrates and the ideal companion for your maximum performance. At Gigas, we curate a selection of the purest carbohydrate powders from leading manufacturers such as GN Laboratories, Peak, and BioTech USA.
From the rapidly available high-speed variant (DE19) to modern products with low osmolarity (DE6), here you will find the ideal energy source for your performance. We place particular emphasis on raw materials that deliver energy without burdening the stomach.
Maltodextrin 6, 12, or 19 – Which value fits your goal?
Many athletes face the question: what does the number after the name mean? The DE value (dextrose equivalent) indicates how extensively the plant-based starch (usually corn starch) has been enzymatically broken down into smaller building blocks such as dextrin, maltose, and glucose. It determines how quickly the body absorbs the split chains and how sweet the powder tastes.
An often underestimated factor at the professional level is osmolarity. In physical terms, it describes how many particles are dissolved in a liquid. Isotonic solutions (the same pressure as blood plasma) pass through the stomach the fastest. Since our premium standard (especially DE6) consists of very long molecular chains, the particle density in the solution is significantly lower than with simple sugars. The result: the drink leaves the stomach rapidly and ensures a seamless and stable energy supply without you feeling full or bloated during your workout.
While classic products often rely on high values, the trend in professional sports is therefore clearly moving toward lower values for a more constant energy release. Here is the comparison of our bestsellers:
| Type | Properties & taste | Gigas recommendation |
| Maltodextrin 6 (Premium Standard) |
Long-chain carbohydrates with a complex structure. Nearly taste-neutral. Low osmolarity means: it is particularly well tolerated and does not sit heavily in the stomach. | GN Laboratories (tip) |
| Maltodextrin 12 (Medium) |
The middle ground. Less sweet than 19, but still fast energy. | (Increasingly being replaced by DE6) |
| Maltodextrin 19 (High Speed) |
Very short carbohydrate chains. Tastes sweet. Produces a rapid insulin peak. Ideal when you need sugar in your blood immediately. | Peak Glucofast |
Muscle building & bodybuilding: Maltodextrin after training
In bodybuilding, the "anabolic window" after your workout is crucial. To maximally support muscle building and more strength, experienced athletes combine their whey protein with a fast carbohydrate source. Here, your goal decides which product to choose:
- The fast insulin spike: If you train extremely hard and want energy to be immediately available to your muscles to refill empty energy stores (glycogen stores), reach for Glucofast (DE19). It drives insulin up and channels nutrients into the cell.
- Intra-workout (during exertion): During very long sessions (over 60 minutes), your reserves become noticeably depleted. A moderate amount of the neutral powder in water (approx. 30g) helps here to keep the intensity high through the last set. Unlike solid food, the liquid form does not burden the body during exertion.
- The lean bulk (quality gains): Many modern athletes avoid extreme blood sugar fluctuations so as not to store unnecessary fat or fatty acids. Here, the product from GN is superior. It delivers the energy for recovery but releases it more steadily.
DIY weight gainer: Using bulk Maltodextrin powder cleverly
You want maximum calorie control? Many of our customers use the pure powder in bulk packs to mix their own weight gainer. This is often cheaper and of higher quality than ready-made blends.
Especially for so-called "hardgainers," who struggle to put on weight, it is often a challenge to cover their enormous calorie needs through solid meals alone. After a big plate of pasta or rice, many feel sluggish and full. A liquid shake, on the other hand, delivers hundreds of calories without paralyzing the digestive system for hours.
Thanks to its neutral taste, it is also perfect for enriching smoothies, drinks, or solid foods such as muesli or quark. It fits into any diet and your individual recipes to invisibly increase energy density.
Recipe: The Gigas Clean Gainer
- 50g protein powder (e.g. 100% Dairy Whey)
- 60-80g Maltodextrin powder (We recommend GN DE6 for a neutral taste)
- 10g Creatine or glutamine
- 500ml water or oat milk
Result: approx. 600 clean calories without feeling stuffed.
Pure Maltodextrin vs. dextrose & carb matrices
We are often asked: "Is Maltodextrin superior to dextrose?" The answer lies in the chemistry. Pure grape sugar (dextrose) draws a great deal of water into the stomach and intestines. This can lead to nausea during sports – especially under intense exertion.
The high-quality raw material binds less water (lower osmolarity). That is why you can drink large amounts of energy without burdening your digestion. In addition, pure products are usually free from fructose, sucrose, gluten, and unnecessary additives. This applies especially to the ultra-pure powder from GN Laboratories.
Another disadvantage of simple sugars is the so-called "rebound effect" (sugar crash). After the rapid rise, blood sugar often falls back below the starting level, you fall into an energy slump and become tired. The complex structure of our top sellers mitigates this effect, which ensures a more even performance throughout the entire workout.
Special case carb matrix: Products such as Olimp Carbonox or BioTech CarboX are not pure maltos but a complex carbohydrate blend of malto, dextrose, and fructose. They are ideal if you are looking for a flavored drink, but keep in mind that you are tied to a fixed flavor here.
