Fir

Fir is a tree whose shoots and oil are used to make medicine. Fir products are used orally for pain and inflammatory swellings in the respiratory tract, colds, coughs, bronchitis, fever and inflammation of the mouth and throat. They are also taken for muscle and nerve pain, an increased tendency to infections and tuberculosis. Some people apply fir products directly to the skin for muscle, nerve and joint pain. Fir products are also added to bath water to treat mental illness.

How do fir products work?

Fir shoots may reduce the production of mucus in the windpipe and act as a mild germicide. When applied to the skin, fir essential oil increases circulation in the treated areas, causes redness and generates a feeling of warmth, which can help relieve pain in underlying tissues.

How effective are fir products?

There is not enough scientific data to make a statement about the effectiveness of fir products for colds, coughs, bronchitis, fever, inflammation of the mouth and throat, nerve and muscle pain, and tuberculosis. Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of fir products in these applications.

Safety and side effects

Fir products may be safe and harmless for most people. The potential side effects of fir products are not known.

Precautions and warnings

Pregnancy and lactation: Not enough is known about the use of fir products during pregnancy and lactation. For this reason, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid such products.

Asthma: Fir products may aggravate asthma and should therefore not be used by asthmatics.

Whooping cough: Fir products can aggravate whooping cough.

Major skin injuries, acute skin diseases, febrile or infectious diseases, heart failure or extreme muscle tension: If you suffer from any of these disorders, fir products should not be applied to the skin or added to bath water as they can have harmful effects.

Interactions

At the present time there is no information on interactions of fir with medications or supplements.

Dosage

An appropriate dosage of fir products depends on various factors such as age, state of health and others. At the present time, there is insufficient scientific data to make a statement about appropriate dosage ranges for different fir products. For this reason, you should follow the dosage instructions on the label and/or consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
