What is ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a medicinal plant from India that has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for several millennia. Ashwagandha is also known as the king of Ayurvedic herbs and is primarily used to reduce stress and increase energy levels (1,2). The herb is also used to improve the ability to concentrate (3) and to relieve anxiety (4). Ashwagandha is classified as a so-called adaptogen. As such, it has a reputation for being able to increase the body's natural resistance to internal and external stressors. Numerous scientific studies have now confirmed this stress-regulating effect of ashwagandha (1,5,6). However, these studies have also linked the active ingredient to a whole range of other benefits. For example, ashwagandha was able to reduce cortisol levels in the subjects of one study (5,6). In other studies, positive effects on the test subjects' sleep were particularly evident (7).

Although ashwagandha is primarily known for its stress-relieving and calming effects, the medicinal plant also has various effects in other areas that make it particularly interesting for athletes and health-conscious people. For example, one study showed that test subjects who took ashwagandha were able to build up to 1.7 times more strength and up to 2.3 times more muscle mass than without ashwagandha (8). These effects are presumably mainly due to the fact that ashwagandha was able to increase the level of endogenous anabolic hormones by up to 40 % in male test subjects in various studies (5,8). In addition, significantly less exercise-induced muscle damage was observed in the test subjects (8). When these properties are combined with the anti-inflammatory (9,10) and antioxidant properties of ashwagandha (10) also observed in studies, it quickly becomes clear why supplementation in test subjects could potentially lead to significantly faster and better recovery after sporting activities (8). But that was not all, ashwagandha was not only able to improve muscle growth in test subjects. It was even able to accelerate fat loss in test subjects in various studies (11,12). According to the results of the studies, ashwagandha actually had physiological effects on fat loss. Among other things, there are indications that ashwagandha could normalize the body's own levels of the two thyroid hormones T3 and T4 (13). Both are of crucial importance for the regulation of metabolic processes and the breakdown of fatty tissue. Ashwagandha has also been used in studies to regulate blood glucose levels and thus also to increase insulin sensitivity (14,15). It also promoted the function of the immune system (16,17,18) and improved cognitive function and memory performance in test subjects in one study.

A large part of these effects of ashwagandha is attributed to the so-called withanolides. In order to be able to guarantee a constant, optimal effect, GN therefore relies on the branded raw material KSM-66® This is considered the gold standard in terms of ashwagandha raw materials and impresses with its sensationally high withanolide content.
