Is curcumin a fat burner?
Supplement science update
For those who need another reason to supplement with curcumin (a spice found in yellow mustard and curry), listen up. Scientists at Tufts University recently reported that curcumin suppressed fat cell differentiation, increased fat oxidation and reduced body fat in a 12-week study conducted in mice.
While clinical studies are trying to replicate these results in humans, a forward-looking approach (which I also follow myself) is to take 1 to 3 grams of curcumin per day. The way I see it, there are very, very few supplements that offer simultaneous protection against cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, prostate cancer, arthritis and symptoms of chronic fatigue while also having the potential to improve body composition.
Curcumin supplements that contain an ingredient called piperine, which is extracted from black pepper, have increased bioavailability compared to curcumin supplements that do not contain this ingredient. As curcumin is fat soluble, another trick to improve absorption is to take curcumin with some dietary fat.
