What are omega-3 fatty acids and why are they so important for health?

Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated essential fatty acids. Essential means that these fatty acids are vital for the human body and must be supplied through food or in the form of supplements, as the body cannot produce them itself. Omega-3 fatty acids fulfill a variety of important functions in the human body. Among other things, they serve as important building blocks for cell membranes as well as brain and nerve cells (1). In addition, omega-3 fatty acids are urgently needed precursors for the production of numerous anti-inflammatory endogenous prostaglandins (2). They are therefore crucial for the body to be able to fight inflammation (3). These anti-inflammatory properties were not only able to promote and accelerate regeneration after training in test subjects (4). They also helped to reduce exercise-induced muscle pain and soreness and relieve joint pain (5). Omega-3 fatty acids are also needed for healthy lubrication of the joints and in one study were able to counteract joint problems caused by excessive wear and tear (6). Other important bodily processes in which omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role include the body's own natural hormone production (7), cell metabolism (8) and the production of defense cells of the immune system. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids have a variety of health and well-being benefits. These range from improving insulin sensitivity (9) to promoting the health of the cardiovascular system (10). Omega-3 fatty acids were also able to support the fat loss of subjects in a study during a diet (12). Scientific studies came to the conclusion that omega-3 fatty acids can increase fat loss by 1 to 2 kilograms within 4 weeks with otherwise the same diet and training (13). There are a number of possible reasons for these astonishing effects. For example, one study showed that the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA can increase the use of body fat to provide the body with energy (13,14). In addition, omega-3 fatty acids were able to increase the insulin sensitivity of the test subjects in a study, which resulted in more stable blood sugar levels and less fluctuation in blood sugar levels. In another study, it even ensured a well-groomed and attractive appearance of the test group's skin and hair (15). This effect is also partly due to the anti-inflammatory effect of omega 3. The ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in the diet has been shown to be a decisive factor in the healthy regulation of inflammatory reactions in the body (3). A healthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is now considered even more important than the absolute amount of omega-3 fatty acids consumed daily (2). A ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids of 3:1 to 5:1 is considered optimal, but for most people this ratio is more in the region of 20:1 or even higher (2).

What should you look out for in omega 3 supplements?

There are huge differences in the quality of fish oil products that contain the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which the human body needs in a readily usable form. Many fish oil products available on the market contain just 25% omega-3 fatty acids, while some higher quality products contain up to 50% omega-3 fatty acids. But Triglyceride Omega 3 outshines all these products with its incredible 75% omega-3 content and provides you with a highly concentrated source of EPA and DHA! The latter not only has the advantage that you have to swallow significantly fewer capsules and consume significantly less additional fat to cover your omega 3 requirements. In addition to this, the risk of unpleasant fish-flavored burping, which some people complain about after consuming fish oil capsules, is also significantly reduced, as they consume much less fish oil per portion.
