What is green tea?

Green tea has been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It has long been used in Asia to improve well-being and treat numerous illnesses. As green tea is not fermented in comparison to black tea, it contains a wide range of polyphenols and flavonoids, which are primarily responsible for the health-promoting effects of green tea (2). The best known of these polyphenols is the catechin epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Due to its special manufacturing process, Green TEA from GN Laboratories contains 50 % polyphenols. This high proportion of active ingredients allows the supplement to fully develop its benefits. In addition to these active phytonutrients, green tea contains important trace elements such as iron, fluorine, zinc, chromium and manganese. It also contains important vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamins of the vitamin B complex (3). In addition, green tea contains caffeine and therefore has a mild, clearly noticeable stimulating effect (4). The theanine contained in green tea increases the effects of caffeine on perception and alertness, while at the same time preventing undesirable side effects such as restlessness and nervousness (5).

What are the health benefits of green tea?

The catechins contained in green tea extract have very pronounced antioxidant effects. These are even 100 to 200 times stronger than those of vitamins C and E, which are known as potent antioxidants (6). This means that green tea can effectively protect the cells of the body and the DNA of the cells from damage caused by free radicals. Studies have linked free radicals to the development of numerous diseases, ranging from cardiovascular diseases to degenerative changes in the brain and cancer (7). Furthermore, increased levels of free radicals are one of the most important triggers for premature ageing. For this reason, studies describe antioxidants as potent anti-ageing agents (8), which were able to slow down ageing processes in test subjects. This is why green tea is sometimes said to have a pronounced anti-ageing effect, which could be due to its antioxidant effect. Scientific studies with older people as test subjects have shown that green tea can improve the control of bodily functions and mental abilities such as memory and concentration (9,10). The latter is attributed to the fact that studies have shown that the active ingredients in green tea can increase the development of new brain stem cells in the test group (11). These can be converted into different brain and nerve cells in the brain. In the study setting, green tea was also shown to have positive effects on cardiovascular health. It was able to significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes in the test subjects (12). One of the reasons for this is that it is able to lower the levels of unhealthy LDL cholesterol, while at the same time promoting an increase in the levels of healthy HDL cholesterol (13).

Green tea and fat burning

Green tea and green tea extract are becoming increasingly popular as an aid to weight and fat loss. This development is based on a whole range of mechanisms that can be triggered by the intake of green tea extract. The benefits of these mechanisms include potentially accelerating fat loss and promoting the maintenance of a low body fat percentage. These effects have been demonstrated by a large number of human studies in test groups (14,15,16). The first of these mechanisms is an increase in metabolic rate, which resulted in the subjects' bodies burning significantly more calories even at rest (17). In addition to this, green tea stimulated fat oxidation and caused more fatty acids to be used for energy (17). This not only increases fat loss, but also conserves the glycogen reserves of the muscles , which are usually limited during a diet. As a result, physical performance is less impaired during a diet. This in turn enables intensive training sessions to protect existing muscles and increase calorie consumption, even during a diet. Furthermore, green tea inhibited the activity of the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of the body's own stimulating catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine, which promote fat loss, in the test subjects. As a result, green tea could effectively counteract a diet-induced reduction in metabolic rate and stagnating fat loss progress (18). In addition to promoting the breakdown of body fat, green tea was also able to significantly reduce the absorption of fat from food and fat storage in the test subjects' bodies in a study (19). One of the consequences of this was that some of the fats consumed with food were excreted undigested.

If you look at the health benefits and the effect on fat burning that could be demonstrated in the study participants, it quickly becomes clear why green tea has enjoyed great popularity for a number of years. It also becomes clear why it is becoming increasingly popular as a fat burner or diet support, especially in terms of fat burning. GN provides you with all the benefits of green tea in a single capsule. As always, quality and effect come first. Green TEA from GN Laboratories - because in the end only results count.
