Health

A famous study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 found that social networks promote obesity - obese people tend to network with other obese people and the size of the obesity network increases over time.
In other words, obesity is contagious.
A literature review conducted by German scientists found that some personality types are more prone to obesity. Impulsive people - people who do things spontaneously - have an increased risk of obesity. Neurotic behavior - overly anxious people who show signs of anxiety, depression, anger, confusion, low self-esteem and a tendency toward perfectionism - can predict a tendency toward obesity in women, but not in men. Extroverted behavior (social and friendly people) is associated with obesity in both genders. In addition, the scientists found another striking feature in these test subjects: their cognitive abilities were extremely pronounced.
About 69 percent of Americans are obese or overweight, which encompasses a lot of personality types.

Hardcore science meets herbal medicine
Coach Alwyn Cosgrove has been telling me this for years. Dr. Jonny Bowden lists it as one of the healthiest foods on earth. And it has been an essential part of Asian medicine for centuries.
Last but not least, science has also recognized what many already suspected: Turmeric, or more specifically one of the curcuminiods it contains called curcumin, is the next big superfood.
But curcumin has a small problem: bioavailability.
So there's something that might be able to help you lose fat, prevent catabolism, cope better with pesticides in food and live longer, but it's not well absorbed by the body.
Make no mistake, there is a way around this. Let's first look at the latest research on curcumin and then solve the problem of bioavailability.
622 New studies and counting
The number of studies looking at curcumin is increasing year on year and there is no end in sight. I believe that curcumin is slowly entering the mainstream (at least it should).
Similar to forskolin, curcumin has effects on a variety of biochemical processes in the human body, but as you will see, it does even more. A study published in 2010 in the scientific journal Current Drug Targets (1) identifies the following properties of curcumin:
- Anti-cancer effects
- Antiviral effects
- Anti-arthritis effects
- Antioxidant effects
- Anti-inflammatory effects
Unfortunately, there is not much clinical research focusing on the effects of curcumin as a supplement. And the clinical studies that have been conducted have generally involved people who were ill (cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.)
It is difficult to draw conclusions from these studies for healthy people. Regardless, curcumin has been shown to have benefits in the treatment of osteoarthritis (2), ulcerative colitis (3) and potentially even Alzheimer's disease (4).
Let's take a look at at least a few of the 622 recent curcumin studies and see what's new.
Curcumin...
Promotes fat loss
Curcumin can increase fat loss through a number of mechanisms. It can inhibit the enzyme called fatty acid synthase, which is responsible for the synthesis of body fat, and also increase beta-oxidation (10-11). Another study has shown that curcumin can reduce fatty acid levels by inhibiting the production of mRNA of key enzymes involved in the storage of fatty acids (12).
Prevents cellular damage caused by pesticides in the diet
With the rising popularity of organic foods, scientists are focusing more on the pesticides and their effects that are used in non-organic foods.
Scientists have found that curcumin reduces oxidative stress in white blood cells caused by pesticides (9). So if you can't always eat organic food, you should at least take your curcumin.
Controls cortisol levels and prevents muscle loss during a calorie-restricted diet
Chinese scientists have found that supplementing pigs with curcumin reduced the stress response during transportation.
Although I'm not usually a fan of citing studies conducted in pigs, similar stress-reducing responses were also observed in rats, suggesting that this effect is real and occurs in different species (6). And couldn't we all benefit from a little less cortisol?
Curcumin could also play a role in preventing muscle wasting. The details of this would require a separate article and I'll just say here that curcumin could be an effective addition to your supplement program when it comes to preventing muscle loss during extreme dieting periods.
Improves the function of blood vessels
Thai scientists induced diabetes in rats by sending them to Burger King every day for a month to eat ciniminis (okay, okay, they did this chemically).
After the now diabetic rats were given curcumin, the scientists observed an improvement in diabetes-induced blood vessel dysfunction. The rats also showed reduced levels of free radicals in their blood vessels, particularly superoxide anions - a compound that deactivates nitric oxide (5).
Improves digestive tract health and reduces inflammation
Due to its ability to inhibit the COX-2 enzyme, curcumin has anti-inflammatory effects. However, unlike drugs, curcumin does not irritate the digestive tract or cause nasty side effects such as heart attacks or strokes.
Curcumin could protect your gut. German scientists have found that curcumin administered to mice reduced inflammation around the gut and strengthened the gut wall, preventing bacteria from passing through the gut wall (7).
Fights resistant cancer cells
Cancer cells often become resistant to chemotherapy. This poses a problem in the chemotherapy treatment of pancreatic cancer. However, scientists from New Zealand have found that curcumin was able to reverse resistance to several chemotherapy drugs in pancreatic cancer cells (8). Dear cancer, f**k you!
How to increase the bioavailability of curcumin
As mentioned above, a potential problem with curcumin is its poor bioavailability. It is simply not well absorbed by the body. However, there are a few things that have been shown to help increase bioavailability.
Certain methods, such as nanoparticulation, are effective but not particularly practical (I don't know about you, but I haven't found the "nanoparticulate" switch on my food processor yet).
However, there are two more practical things you can do:
1. use a curcumin supplement that contains piperine.
Piperine is an alkaloid found in black pepper that can increase curcumin absorption by 2000% in humans (13).
2. take your curcumin with olive oil
Taking curcumin with olive oil significantly increases curcumin blood levels (4).
Summary
I've only scratched the surface in this article, but it's safe to say that curcumin should play a role in your supplement arsenal. Keep an eye out as new studies and new clinical trial results are being published all the time!

How to build muscle and lose fat in the same day
Here's what you need to know...
- If you think that mass gain and fat loss are things that need to be done in phases separately, think again. By controlling your insulin, you can allow your body to build muscleand burn fat on a daily basis.
- Muscle is made up of protein. To build muscle, your body needs to synthesize more protein than it breaks down.
- Insulin is responsible for muscle growth and the storage of muscle glycogen.
- Excessive insulin production will lead to storage of body fat and inhibition of fat burning.
- To build muscle and burn fat on the same day, you need to manipulate your insulin production by strategically consuming carbohydrates. Prioritize carbohydrate intake around your training sessions.
Daily manipulation
Forget the idea of bulking and definition phases that beginners love to talk about. Instead, build muscle and burn fat on the same day to maximize your muscle gain while keeping body fat under control.
How do you do it? By manipulating insulin.
Depending on your background, you'll probably view insulin as either the anabolic holy grail or the natural enemy of fat loss. What is insulin really?
Insulin is like a weapon
It's human nature to categorize things as either good or bad, but this short-sighted way of thinking often does us more harm than good.
Those who want to lose fat label insulin as the "bad" hormone that makes us flabby by inhibiting fat burning and increasing fat storage. Those who want to build muscle refer to insulin as an anabolic and anti-catabolic phenomenon.
How can a hormone be a fat boy's nemesis and a skinny boy's best defense?
The truth is that insulin is like a weapon: it can harm you or help you. And the good news is that you can accurately predict how insulin will act.
Know your opponent
Insulin is an anabolic hormone. In fact, it's even more anabolic than growth hormones. The problem? It's indiscriminately anabolic and doesn't care if it helps build muscle or fat.
But you can't blame insulin for this. Ultimately, it's just a hormone that does its job. And its primary job is to maintain safe and consistent blood sugar levels in the 80-100 mg/dl range.
When blood sugar levels rise above 100, the pancreas releases insulin. Then the ever-helpful insulin removes the excess glucose from the blood and transports it to a storage site where it is stored.
There are three different storage sites for excess glucose:
- Muscle glycogen
- liver glycogen
- Adipose tissue
And of course we prefer to store it in the first two, but the truth is that insulin doesn't care. It will simply do what it is programmed to do.
So let's take a look at what insulin is programmed to do.
4 good things insulin does
1. insulin builds muscle
Insulin stimulates protein synthesis (and therefore muscle growth) by getting ribosomes to make more protein.
Muscles are made of protein. Protein is made by ribosomes. Ribosomes are activated by insulin. Allow me to quote Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology:
"Insulin, through some as yet unknown pathway, turns on the "machinery of ribosomes." In the absence of insulin, ribosomes simply stop working - almost as if insulin were operating an 'on-off' switch."
Does this mean that insulin "helps" build muscle? No, it means that insulin is needed to build muscle.
2. insulin inhibits the breakdown of protein
Insulin inhibits the breakdown of muscle protein. The anti-catabolic nature of insulin is just as important as its anabolic nature. Every day your body synthesizes some protein and breaks down some protein at the same time.
Whether you build or lose muscle over time is a physiological math game. To build muscle you need to synthesize more protein than you break down.
Anyone with any financial intelligence will tell you that it doesn't matter how much money you make - what matters is how much money you can keep. The same goes for muscle.
3. insulin transports amino acids into muscle cells
Insulin actively transports certain amino acids directly into muscle cells. You can probably guess which amino acids get this special treatment: BCAAs, which are found in your training diet for a reason.
Branched-chain amino acids are personally escorted into the muscle cells by insulin, which is essential if you want to build muscle.
4. insulin increases the activity of glycogen synthase
Insulin increases the activity of enzymes (such as glycogen synthase) that stimulate glycogen formation. This means that insulin helps to store glucose in the muscle cells, improving performance and recovery and making your muscles bigger.
The formation of muscle glycogen results in fuller, denser looking muscles.
So far so good, but what about the other side of the coin?
5 bad things insulin does
1. insulin inhibits hormone-sensitive lipase
Insulin inhibits an enzyme called hormone-sensitive lipase, which is responsible for breaking down fatty tissue.
If you can't break down stored fat(triglycerides) and convert it into a form that can be burned (free fatty acids), then you won't get leaner.
2. insulin reduces the use of fat
Insulin reduces the use of fat for energy and causes the body to burn carbohydrates to produce energy. In other words, insulin protects your fat stores.
Even though this is not good for your body composition, it makes sense when you look at the main function of insulin, which is to remove excess glucose from the blood. And insulin will accomplish this by both storing and burning carbohydrates.
3. insulin increases fatty acid synthesis
Insulin increases fatty acid synthesis in the liver, which is the first step in the process of building up body fat. This depends on the availability of excess carbohydrates - the amount above what can be immediately burned for energy or stored as muscle glycogen.
4. insulin activates lipoprotein lipase
Once activated by insulin, lipoprotein lipase breaks down triglycerides into absorbable fatty acids that can be quickly and easily absorbed, converted back into triglycerides and stored by fat cells.
But if you understand a bit of medical terminology, lipoprotein synthase will look like a good thing at first glance. After all, it's an enzyme that breaks down fat, so why wouldn't you want the activity of this enzyme to increase?
Remember we just talked about how insulin increases fatty acid synthesis in the liver.
Once those extra fatty acids are converted to triglycerides, lipoproteins (e.g. VLDL) dump them into the bloodstream and get told to find a new home.
The really cool thing is that triglycerides can't be absorbed by fat cells...at least not until lipoprotein lipase is activated. So even if you have plenty of triglycerides in your blood, you won't get any fatter until insulin activates lipoprotein lipase.
5. insulin promotes glucose transport into fat cells
Insulin increases the movement of glucose through the fat cell membrane and into the fat cells. The breakdown and burning of fat for energy is increased in the absence of insulin. (But remember that insulin also increases the transport of glucose into muscle cells).
The solution to the insulin puzzle
Quite simply, insulin is an anabolic transport hormone that does its job. We would die if it did not do this.
Insulin doesn't care whether you build fat or muscle. All that matters to insulin is keeping blood sugar levels in the normal range. When blood glucose levels rise, insulin is released and it will quickly restore normal serum glucose levels.
It is not the job of insulin to release itself for leanness or muscle growth. It is up to you to optimally stimulate insulin secretion through your diet. And there is a way to do just that.
First, you need to decide where you are on the fat loss/muscle gain continuum:
"I want to build muscle exclusively."
If hypertrophy is your primary goal, then you want high insulin levels throughout the day.
You especially want high insulin levels around training to take advantage of the fact that muscle cell membranes are particularly permeable to insulin and anything that transports it (like glucose or BCAAs) at this time.
"I only want to lose fat."
If your goal is solely to lose body fat, then you want to reduce your average insulin levels throughout the day.
But don't get this wrong. Some people think that having low insulin levels throughout the day is the best way to lose fat. But if working out is more to you than just strolling around the mall, then you need a smarter strategy.
Even if you don't care about building muscle, it's still important to initiate some insulin secretion around the time of your workout. This will stop exercise-induced catabolism and also transport glucose and amino acids into the muscle cells.
Otherwise, you will lose valuable muscle mass and hinder the metabolic machinery that burns fat. You don't want to get thin but still flabby, do you? Well, that's exactly what you'll achieve if you don't regularly give your muscles carbohydrates.
"I want to build muscle and lose fat."
That's a goal everyone can identify with: Build muscle and lose fat.
Sadly, most of us believe the experts who say it's impossible to build lean muscle mass while losing body fat. Conventional wisdom says that you need to alternate between bulking phases and definition phases to gain more muscle mass with less body fat. But this so-called wisdom is ultimately not so wise.
When blood sugar levels are high, insulin is released and glucose is stored in the muscles or liver as glycogen. When blood sugar levels are low, insulin secretion stops and fat becomes the body's primary source of energy.
Insulin is like a switch that controls from moment to moment whether you burn fat or build muscle. It does not take the whole day for this change to take place. In fact, it only takes minutes!
This means that you can plan your day so that you have periods of time when you focus on building muscle and other periods of time when you focus on burning fat. And you can manipulate the length of these phases to change the rate at which you build muscle or lose fat.
Want to build muscle faster? Increase the amount of insulin you release. This is especially helpful if you do it around your training session. Insulin won't convert glucose into fat if it can store that glucose as muscle glycogen.
And after an intense training session with weights, both muscle and liver glycogen stores are depleted to some degree and ready to soak up serious amounts of glucose. So don't be too cautious with your carbohydrate intake at this time.
For even faster muscle building, you should also increase your insulin levels at one or two other times during the day. You could achieve this with some higher carbohydrate meals.
Then, to cover the fat loss part of this equation, keep insulin levels low during the rest of the day.
Flip the switch
Whether you want to promote muscle gain or maximize fat loss, insulin is the switch you need to learn to turn on for gains and turn off for fat loss.
Whatever you choose, remember that the switch doesn't have to be on or off for months in a row. Choose to manipulate insulin on a daily basis and you can reap all the benefits while avoiding all the downsides.

Was können Sie jetzt an Ihrer bestehenden Ernährung verändern?
So denken kleine Kinder.

What you should eat for a healthy gut and what you should avoid.
You are 90% non-human
Your body is made up of around 10 trillion cells. But you are also home to around 100 trillion bacterial cells. Do the math - 90% of you are not human.
This means that there are more bacteria in your body than there are people in the world. There are even more bacteria in your body than there are stars in the Milky Way. Together, the bacteria in your body represent about 3000 species with a collective pool of 3 million different genes. Compare this to the paltry 19,000 genes that make up the human body.
These bacteria not only play a huge role in regulating your digestive system and immune system, but also your emotions, the way you think, your body fat levels and maybe even the size of your testicles.
What we've learned from wet mice
Neuroscientist John Cryan conducted a very strange experiment. He took mice and split them into two groups. One group was the control group and the other group was given Lactobacillus Ramnosis, a bacterium that is often used to make ordinary yogurt.
After a few weeks, he threw all the mice into two bowls of water to see how they reacted to water stress. Rodents are very good swimmers, but they hate water - it makes them go crazy. The control group tried desperately to get out of the bowl. Their efforts continued for four minutes until they were exhausted and gave up. This is also known as "behavioral despondency".
But what about the mice that had been fed with bacteria? They tried to get out of the bowl, but their efforts were far less desperate. They continued to swim even after the four minutes after which the mice in the control group had given up. After six minutes, Cryan pulled the soaked rodents out of the water.
You're no doubt thinking that the yogurt somehow gave the test group extra stamina, right? Wrong. Cryan found that stress hormone levels were 100 times higher in the control group. All this panic is not good. They burn out and give up after a few minutes, as was the case with the mice in the control group.
The Lactobacillus mice, on the other hand, had only half as many stress hormones coursing through their veins. In addition to this, they showed a profound change in the distribution of their GABA receptors towards a pattern associated with calm, non-stressed animals. GABA has pretty much the opposite effect of stress hormones. It makes them calmer, so they don't panic when thrown into a bowl of water - they don't reach the point of "behavioral despondency".
How was it possible that bacteria in the mice's digestive tract somehow had a calming effect on the mice's brains? Cryan asked himself the same question, so he repeated the experiment, this time cutting the mice's vargus nerve - the large headward nerve leading from the abdomen to the brain - before throwing them into the water.
The swimming Lacto mice with the severed nerve behaved in exactly the same way as the mice in the control group. Desperate paddling. "Behavioral despondency". Cries of "Help me, you bastard!" They gave up after about four minutes. In fact, all positive reactions to the Lactobacillus bacteria were no longer present.
The conclusion is that a colony of Lactobacillus bacteria living in the gut of the long-swimming mice had somehow manipulated the vagus nerve so that it sent a signal to the brain to release the calming chemical GABA.
But is this in any way transferable to humans? Can bacteria actually affect the neurochemistry of humans and change the way we think and react to stress and who knows what else? The short answer is yes, it seems so.
A similar study was conducted in France with humans and without any water sports. The subjects were given massive amounts of two probiotics - Lactobacillus and Bifidobacillus.
After a few weeks, standardized psychological tests indicated that the subjects were less stressed, less anxious and less depressed. These results were confirmed by testing their 24-hour cortisol levels.
The theory is that the bacterial strains produced a huge amount of serotonin - a calming chemical whose levels often rise when you have eaten carbohydrate-rich foods, for example. The human brain normally contains only very small amounts of serotonin, while 80% of our serotonin supply is located in the digestive tract, so it is quite conceivable that bacteria influence this supply.
The results of these experiments, along with other study results, have led the National Academy of Sciences to consider whether they could treat mental disorders with "medicinal" yogurt instead of drugs. But mind control is just the tip of a fermented chunk of cheese of biological processes influenced by bacteria.
Probiotics vs. pathogens
Virtually everyone knows the role that bacteria play in digestion, how they help break down complex carbohydrates and help retain nitrogen from the breakdown of proteins, and that a large portion of your stool is made up of dead or dying bacteria, but I don't want to focus on this. Instead, I want to explore the lesser-known properties of these strange organisms.
For example, the "good" bacteria, probiotics, are believed to be involved in the constant life-and-death battle with pathogens. They do this by damaging or killing these pathogens - sometimes by releasing chemicals, sometimes by changing the pH of the environment or sometimes simply by displacing these pathogens.
These good bacteria also produce nutrients as a by-product of their metabolism, such as certain B vitamins and vitamin K, which are vital for our immune system. In fact, probiotics are believed to make up about 70% of our immune system. Even the appendix, once thought to be an atrophied organ - appears to be a storehouse of probiotics, releasing them when needed during infections.
Many illnesses that plague us could simply be caused by dysbiosis - an imbalance between probiotics and pathogens. There are obvious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn's disease, but other, less suspicious conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes could also be caused or exacerbated by dysbiosis. Dysbiosis could be linked to virtually any autoimmune disease you can think of - from asthma and arthritis, to ulcerative colitis and white spot disease.
What happens is that an imbalance of bacteria, stressful chemicals or hormones cause the gut lining to become more permeable. This increased permeability could then allow unwanted substances to enter your bloodstream, where they alert the immune system and lead to local or systemic inflammation.
The bacteria that made me fat. There's also a lot of research on the idea that bacteria may play a big role in determining body fat levels. Gastric bypass surgery was previously thought to be effective purely for physical reasons, as a smaller stomach leads to fewer calories being consumed, but up to 20% of weight loss could be based on a consequent shift in the balance of bacteria in the gut.
Mice that underwent gastric bypass surgery lost weight as expected, but when scientists transplanted the gut contents of the bypass mice into mice in the control group, the mice in the control group also lost weight rapidly. The same could work in humans.
Another study, which included 792 subjects, found that overweight people may harbor a certain type of bacteria that could contribute to weight gain by helping other organisms around it digest certain nutrients, making more calories available. The authors of the study theorized that this type of bacteria may have been useful to humans thousands of years ago, when fiber played a much larger role in the diet and it was essential that every possible calorie could be squeezed out of the available food.
Scientists also suspect that an imbalance of gut bacteria could increase insulin resistance and increase fat storage in fat cells by suppressing something called FIAF (fasting-induced adipocyte factor).
Yes, they may even contribute to the size of your testicles
Studies into the link between bacteria and obesity even led to the puzzling but welcome observation that mice fed a vanilla-flavored yogurt grew substantially larger testicles - so large that they assumed a gait not unlike that of John Wayne.
Two groups of mice were involved in the study. One group was fed junk food and yogurt and the other was fed a healthier diet plus yogurt. The junk food mice experienced a 15% increase in testicle size, while the healthy eaters only experienced a 5% increase in testicle size (the junk food mice had smaller testicles to begin with, hence the difference in percentages).
The mice that ate a healthy diet plus yoghurt fertilized their mates faster and produced more offspring. They also grew a shiny coat and had a 10-fold higher follicle density compared to normal, non-yogurt eating mice, making them look like little, white-haired Alec Baldwins.
Is this also transferable to humans? It would appear that it is. Nutritional epidemiologist Jorge Chavarro has found that eating yogurt improves sperm quality in men.
Don't like bacteria? Then you would have been better off staying in the womb
The first and last time you were ever sterile - completely free of bacteria - was in the womb. But then, as you were rudely pushed out into the world through your mother's birth canal, you were literally flooded with bacteria (babies born by caesarean section miss out on this seemingly vital bacterial bath and are believed to be more prone to certain allergies, eczema and even obesity as a result).
They were exposed to a world of microorganisms. During the weeks and months that followed, you were cared for by a bacteria-laden mother and father, exposed to bacteria-laden air, kissed by your aunts' bacteria-laden lips, licked by a bacteria-laden dog's tongue, and licked a bacteria-laden carpet. All of this played a role in the development of your personal bacterial ecosystem, which, if you were lucky, flourished and thrived.
If you weren't so lucky, you may have been the child of bacteriophobic parents, exposed to multiple antibiotic cycles or had your bacterial population decimated over the years by antiseptic soap, disinfectants, antibacterial mouthwashes and various prescription bacteria-killing drugs.
Metaphorically speaking, your bacterial ecosystem is the rainforest and you have willfully and unchecked let in hordes of loggers, farmers, miners, industrialists and poachers who have trampled your immune system and most likely caused a severe case of dysbiosis. In this case, it is very likely that your bacterial population is out of balance.
Yogurt and probiotics are not the cure
Let me clear up a common misconception. Eating a cup of yogurt every day isn't going to do much when it comes to reestablishing the right bacteria in your gut. There are hundreds or thousands of species of bacteria in your digestive tract and a typical yogurt may contain two different strains of bacteria.
However, if you insist on going the yogurt route, it's best to avoid brands that contain sugar, as these are likely to feed competing bacteria. It's also recommended to avoid any brand advertised on TV by women who fake orgasm when they eat the yogurt, instead look out for yogurt made by shepherds using yak milk or similar - stuff that may even have been strained through jute and contains nasty clumps of bacteria (and I'm only half joking here).
And there's more discouraging news: Taking most probiotics supplements often doesn't work either. No study to date has been able to show that supplemented probiotics became permanent gut residents.
Now before you throw the aforementioned studies in my face - the studies about the mind-controlling yogurt and the mice with bigger eggs, let me mention that there are certain strains of bacteria that can have medicinal effects in high doses over a short period of time, but that doesn't mean they become permanent gut residents.
Part of this problem may have something to do with the supplements themselves, which are often mishandled. Capsules and tablets should be stored in a cool place - and not just after you have bought them, but immediately after they have been manufactured.
If you decide to go down the pill or capsule route, then you should ensure that these supplements meet the following standards:
- The amount of bacteria should be in CFUs (colony forming units) and not milligrams.
- The product should be stored in a cool place regardless of the label claims.
- The product should be protected by a protective medium such as oil, nutrient cultures or coated tablets.
A better way: fermentation
A better tactic is to eat foods that are probiotic and prebiotic. These are fermented foods that contain beneficial bacteria and provide them with nutrients at the same time.
Admittedly, most of these fermented foods - like the aforementioned yogurt - rely heavily on the action of one or two microorganisms (Lactobacillus and Bifodobacillus), which is only a small sample of the microorganisms in a healthy gut, but it looks like these bacteria can create an environment conducive to the growth of other healthy bacteria in the same way that a rising tide lifts all boats.
Regardless, some experimentation is necessary to see which fermented foods work for you. Try at least one of the foods in the following list each day. (Keep in mind that one serving of sauerkraut contains about the same amount of bacteria as an entire can of certain brands of probiotics in capsule form).
- Kimchi
- Kombucha (a bacterial culture and yeast used to brew a tea)
- miso
- Umeboshi (fermented, pickled plums from Japan)
- Sauerkraut
- Tempeh (fermented soybeans)
- Sour preserves (only those labeled as fermented)
In general, these are foods that normally contain indigestible carbohydrates such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and galactooligosaccharides (GOS). We cannot digest these carbohydrates, but the lactobacilli and bifidobacilli feed on them.
If you buy any of these foods, then you should only buy them from the chilled section of your supermarket, otherwise there is a chance that most of the bacteria they contain will not be viable or will already be dead. Of course, you must also keep these foods in the fridge at home.
You should also refrain from overheating these foods. Many people like cooked sauerkraut, for example. However, heating it too much makes sauerkraut practically sterile.
Foods for gut bacteria health
Foods like the following provide your new gut bacteria with things like FOS and inulin, which these bacteria need to thrive:
- Onions
- garlic
- milk
- bananas
- wheat
- Oats
- artichokes
- Asparagus
- leek
- chicory
If these foods don't sound tasty to you, you can also buy an oligofructose supplement and supplement your diet with at least 5 grams of this per day (hopefully getting you close to 20 grams of prebiotics per day).
As for GOS, it may be an even more effective prebiotic compared to FOS and inulin. It has recently attracted the interest of researchers who have shown that it can significantly reduce anxiety and depression in human subjects - both thought to be the result of inflammation.
Foods that are rich in GOS include:
- Lentils
- Chickpeas/hummus
- Green peas
- Lima beans
- Kidney beans
Half a cup of each of these foods should be enough to keep your bacteria growing. Each of these foods contains about 6 to 7 grams of prebiotic fiber, of which about 3 to 4 grams are GOS.
What can you expect
Let's say you do all of this. You will become a foster parent to trillions of new bacteria. How will you know that this is good for you?
In the short term, you might suffer less bloating, develop more regular bowel movements, experience a less bloated feeling, develop a better complexion and notice stools that are more "aerodynamic".
In the long run, this approach could help you alleviate any autoimmune issues you may be suffering from, including asthma, skin allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, etc. In addition, you may also become more resistant to disease.
