In the past, the term "clean muscle building" was reserved for the idea of eating a lot of whole and nutritious foods to build muscle.
Over time, the meaning of this term has shifted to "maintain a small calorie surplus to build muscle and prevent body fat gain". The term "clean" now refers to gaining as little fat as possible while building mountains of muscle, rather than eating healthy foods.
It seems like we've started to care less about food choices and more about macronutrients and calories. But what is more important? Do we need to eat healthy to build muscle? Is chasing calories and macronutrient amounts a waste of effort?
Today we will answer these questions and more.
What are micronutrients?
Micronutrients are small compounds of which we only need traces - hence the term "micro". This term refers to 13 essential vitamins and 16 essential minerals.
Both vitamins and minerals play crucial roles in numerous biological processes in the body. These processes include hormone balance, energy metabolism, immune system function, bone development, brain function, the production of essential proteins such as collagen and much more.
Even though most people do not pay attention to micronutrients, they are essential for the normal function and development of the body. Without micronutrients, the body would stop functioning.
The main difference between vitamins and minerals is their chemical status and origin. Vitamins are organic compounds (produced by living organisms such as plants and animals) that can be broken down in the body in different ways. Minerals are inorganic in nature (they are found in soil and water) and cannot be broken down.
When you eat fruit or vegetables, for example, you consume the vitamins that these plants have produced and the minerals that they have extracted from the soil. Most vitamins and minerals must be obtained from food and/or supplements, as the human body cannot produce them itself.
To get enough of each micronutrient, we need to consume a wide range of foods. In some cases, supplements can also help.
What are macronutrients?
Unlike vitamins and minerals, macronutrients are much easier to keep track of. First of all, there are only three of them: proteins, carbohydrates and fat. Of course, there is also fiber and alcohol, but these should be considered separately.
We need carbohydrates, protein and fat in much larger quantities and that's where the "macro" in the name comes from. While we only need quantities of vitamins and minerals in the microgram or milligram range, we need protein, carbohydrates and fat in the multi-digit gram range. One of the reasons for this is that macronutrients provide energy (calories).
Protein and carbohydrates each provide 4 kcal per gram, while fat provides 9 kcal per gram. Alcohol provides 7 kcal and fiber between 0 and 2 kcal per gram. However, since alcohol is not an essential nutrient and scientists have not yet figured out how many of the alcohol calories really count, we will more or less ignore alcohol in our considerations.
Since the human body needs calories to survive and function, we need to eat enough. The three macronutrients also have specific roles in the body. Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy and glucose (a simple sugar) is the primary source of energy for the brain.
Protein provides the body with the building blocks (amino acids) it needs for repair and growth. Fat supports brain health and hormonal balance, protects our organs, helps the body build new cells, regulates body temperature and much more.
We need to consume all three macronutrients to function properly, feel good, build muscle and stay healthy.
What nutrients do we need to build muscle?
In addition to adequate rest and productive training, we also need to pay careful attention to what we eat if we want to build muscle. Exercise is what stimulates muscle building, but if we don't provide the body with the right nutrients, then all that effort will be for nothing.
Without further ado, here is what is necessary to ensure maximum muscle growth through proper nutrition.
1. adequate calorie and protein intake
This is the most important aspect. Once you get past the beginner stage, you will find it very difficult - if not impossible - to build more muscle if you don't eat enough calories.
But what does 'enough' mean in this context? Well, you need to eat slightly more calories than you burn each day (i.e. generate a calorie surplus). The general recommendation is a calorie intake that is 200 to 300 kcal above your maintenance calorie intake. This ensures that your body has the energy it needs to perform its many tasks and build new muscle tissue.
This calorie surplus must be accompanied by an adequate protein intake. A good rule of thumb is about 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight during the muscle-building phase and 3 grams during the dieting phase.
As we mentioned earlier, protein will provide the body with the amino acids it needs to repair and grow, which also applies to muscle tissue. If you don't consume enough protein, the excess calories will only contribute to an increase in body fat.
2. enough fat
Protein and carbohydrates can have a direct, acute impact on your muscle building efforts. If you don't eat enough protein, your body won't be able to build new muscle tissue. If you don't eat enough carbohydrates, you'll feel tired and fatigued and won't be able to perform productive workouts.
Fats work in a more subtle way. They influence many processes in the body and are also involved in hormone production. If you eat a very low-fat diet for a while, it will take some time for the consequences to catch up with you. These consequences could include lower endogenous testosterone levels.
In one study, a group of 30 men followed a low-fat diet for 6 weeks (1). The scientists found that even after this short period, the subjects' total testosterone levels and free testosterone levels had dropped by 10%. Over a longer period of time, testosterone levels could drop even further. And if you want to build muscle, this is the last thing you want.
A good rule of thumb is to eat 0.6 to 1.3 grams of fat per kilogram of body weight per day. If you weigh 80 kilos, this would be between 48 and 104 grams of fat per day.
3. enough carbohydrates
Carbohydrates, which are the body's primary source of energy, are essential for muscle growth. Training or other physical activity depletes the glycogen stores of muscles and liver. Carbohydrates then help you to replenish these energy stores for your next training session.
If you don't consume enough carbohydrates, your body starts to break down fat and protein and convert them into glucose.
Carbohydrate requirements vary significantly from person to person, with the three main determining factors being gender, age and activity level. After you have met your protein and fat needs, you should aim to consume the rest of your calories in the form of carbohydrates.
Does the ratio of macronutrients matter for muscle building?
It does matter, but it doesn't have to be exact or complicated. Saying that you need to eat 30% carbohydrates per day may sound good on paper, but it assumes that all carbohydrates are equal, which is not the case.
The fact is that these ratios may look good on paper, but they don't work equally well for everyone. That's why the above fist rains are much better in practice. They are less confusing and allow you greater flexibility.
If you want to eat more carbohydrates on one day, then you simply need to reduce your fat intake. Of course, this also works in the other direction.
Are vitamins needed for muscle building and repair?
As long as you meet your calorie, protein, carbohydrate and fat needs, you will achieve most of your gains. However, if you want to stay healthy in the long run and potentially make some major gains in the gym, then you should pay attention to your vitamin intake.
Scientists have found that vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, D, and E play a direct role in muscle growth and repair through different mechanisms.
What about minerals?
Similar to vitamins, minerals are also essential for the body and certain deficiencies (such as a lack of zinc) can lower testosterone levels.
Here are some of the minerals that are most important according to the scientific literature: Zinc, magnesium, copper, selenium, iron and calcium.
Which is better: IIFYM vs. clean eating?
The term IIFYM misleads many people as it is interpreted as "eat whatever you want as long as the macronutrient levels fit". Sure, this is the exact meaning of the term, but many people see this way of eating as a sort of challenge to figure out how much junk food they can eat while still hitting their calorie and macronutrient goals.
Of course, this type of dietary approach has its merits, but it's not necessarily the best long-term approach, especially for people who want to take care of their health. Here are a few things to consider if you want to use this approach:
#1: The long-term health effects
This point is pretty clear. Our food choices play an essential role in our long-term health and if your health is important to you, then your diet should be primarily based on whole foods. It is also important to get all the essential vitamins and minerals.
#2: The acute effects of poor quality food
We've all experienced the acute effects of poor quality foods on our own bodies. You might get enough calories and protein from low quality foods, but consider how you will feel throughout the day.
In most cases, there will be sudden spikes and dips in energy levels. Other effects include concentration problems, irritability and general sluggishness, not to mention digestive issues such as bloating, constipation and diarrhea.
Wholesome, nutritious foods provide the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs for various processes. They also provide fiber, which has numerous benefits that go far beyond good digestion. What's more, these foods also provide slow-digesting carbohydrates that guarantee a continuous flow of energy.
#3: The protein quality
A complete protein is one that provides all 9 essential amino acids. The problem is that many foods do not contain complete proteins. It's one thing to consume 30 grams of protein in the form of meat, but quite another to consume the same amount of protein in the form of bread, cookies and chips.
So not only is it essential to consume enough protein - you also need to pay attention to the sources of protein.
Of course, you could reach your goal with 180 grams of protein from a combination of junk food, meat, dairy and some vegetables, but it's pretty safe to say that the same amount of protein in the form of whole foods would lead to better gains in the long run.
#4: Potential problems with satiety
Some people have a big appetite and have a hard time not getting fat during a mass-building phase. For such individuals, it is best to eat as little junk food as possible and save all calories for more satiating foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
On the other hand, there are those who have a small appetite and are often referred to as hardgainers. These individuals will likely need to eat some junk food here and there to consume enough calories each day.
Clean eating or IIFYM?
Based on the above recommendations, I would say that most people would be best off with a modified clean eating approach. In other words, the majority of your diet should be based on whole, nutritious foods, saving 15 to 20% of your calories for your favorite treats.
This will firstly ensure that you get enough vitamins, minerals and fiber, while also consuming plenty of high-quality protein, slow-digesting carbohydrates and healthy fats.
Secondly, this approach gives you the freedom to eat your favorite treats in moderate amounts. We all need a break from chicken and broccoli once in a while. It's okay to eat some junk food. As long as you're eating mostly healthy foods, there's no reason not to have some ice cream on a hot summer day or a few cookies for dessert every now and then.
In addition to this, you can maintain your social life and enjoy meals and snacks with friends and family without having to worry about them not being 100% 'clean eating'.
Conclusion
As with most things in life, nutrition is about finding the right balance.
We should have the freedom to enjoy our favorite foods from time to time and we should be able to enjoy a dessert after a meal.

After looking at the Paleo diet, the vegan diet, low-carb diets, the Dukan diet and extremely low-fat diets in the first part of this article, we will take a closer look at the Atkins diet, the HCG diet, the Zone diet and intermittent fasting in this second part of this article.
6 The Atkins diet
The Atkins diet is the best-known low-carb weight loss diet. Its advocates insist that you can lose weight by eating as much protein and fat as you want, as long as you avoid carbohydrates.
The main reason that low-carb diets are so effective for fat loss is that they reduce appetite. As a result, you eat fewer calories without having to think about it (32, 40).
How this diet works: The Atkins diet is divided into four phases. It starts with an introductory phase, during which you eat less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for two weeks. During the other phases, carbohydrates are slowly added back to the diet as you approach your weight goal.
Weight loss: The Atkins diet has been studied extensively and these studies conclude that it leads to weight loss faster than other low-fat diets (52, 81).
Other studies note that low-carbohydrate diets are very helpful for weight loss. These are particularly successful when it comes to reducing abdominal fat - the most dangerous type of body fat located in the abdomen. (30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36)
Other benefits: Numerous studies show that low-carb diets like the Atkins diet can reduce risk factors for disease including elevated blood triglyceride levels, high cholesterol levels, high blood sugar levels, high insulin levels and high blood pressure (34, 42, 43, 44, 45).
Compared to other weight loss diets, low-carb diets are also better at improving levels of good HDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels and other health markers (52, 81).
The cons: Like other low-carb diets, the Atkins diet is safe and healthy for most people, but can cause problems in rare cases.
Summary: The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate weight loss diet. It is effective for weight loss, but also has many other health benefits.
7 The HCG diet
The HCG diet is an extreme diet that can result in very rapid weight loss of up to 0.5 - 1 kilogram per day. Its advocates claim that it increases the metabolic rate and fat loss without causing hunger (82, 83).
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone that is present in high levels in the body during pregnancy. It signals to the woman's body that she is pregnant and maintains the production of hormones that are important for the development of the fetus. HCG is also used to treat fertility problems (84).
How this diet works: The diet is divided into three phases. During the first phase, you start by taking HCG supplements.
During the second phase, you follow an ultra-low calorie diet with only 500 kcal per day in combination with HCG drops, pellets, injections or sprays. This weight loss phase lasts 3 to 6 consecutive weeks.
During the third phase, the HCG intake is stopped and you slowly start to increase your food intake.
Weight loss: The HCG diet causes weight loss, but several studies conclude that the weight loss is based solely on the ultra-low calorie intake and has nothing to do with the HCG hormone (82, 85, 86, 87). Furthermore, it has not been observed that HCG reduces hunger.
Furthermore, HCG cannot have any effect from a purely biological point of view, at least when taken orally, which for legal reasons is often in homeopathic form. HCG is a peptide hormone that consists of almost 200 amino acids. This hormone is destroyed in the digestive tract and broken down into its amino acids.
And even if traces of HCG reach the intestine, where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream, they cannot pass through the intestinal wall as it is only permeable to free amino acids or peptides consisting of a maximum of 2 to 3 amino acids. Other benefits: Apart from weight loss, there are no documented benefits of the HCG diet.
Cons: Like most ultra-low calorie diets, the HCG diet can result in muscle loss, which in turn results in a reduced ability to burn calories (61).
Such severe calorie restriction reduces the amount of calories your body burns. This is because the body feels like it is starving and therefore tries to conserve energy (63).
In addition to this, most alleged HCG products on the market do not contain any HCG, which is also related to the fact that HCG is only available on prescription except in homeopathic doses and real HCG supplements would therefore be illegal. Ultimately, only HCG injections are able to increase the blood levels of this hormone.
In addition, this diet has many side effects including headaches, fatigue and depression. There is also a case report of a woman who developed blood clots that were most likely caused by this diet (83).
In the USA and many other countries, the HCG diet is not approved even under medical supervision (88).
Summary: The HCG diet is a diet for rapid weight loss. It is not based on science and can cause muscle loss, headaches, fatigue and depression.
8 The Zone Diet
The Zone Diet is a low glycemic load diet that limits carbohydrate intake to 35-45% of daily calorie intake and sets protein and fat intake at 30% of total calories each (89).
This diet only recommends the consumption of carbohydrates with a low glycemic index (GI). The GI of a food is an estimate of how much that food will raise blood sugar levels after consumption.
The Zone Diet was originally developed to reduce diet-induced inflammation, induce weight loss and lower the risk of chronic disease (89).
How this diet works: The Zone Diet recommends that each meal consist of 1/3 protein, 2/3 colorful fruits and vegetables, and a dash of fat, by which is meant monounsaturated fat such as olive oil, avocados, or almonds. This diet also limits the consumption of high-glycemic carbohydrates such as bananas, rice and potatoes.
Weight loss: Studies with low-glycemic diets are quite inconsistent. While some conclude that these diets promote weight loss and reduce appetite, other studies show very little weight loss compared to other diets (90, 91, 92, 93).
Other benefits: The greatest benefit of this diet is a reduction in risk factors for heart disease, such as a reduction in cholesterol and triglyceride levels (92, 94, 95, 96, 97).
One study suggests that the Zone diet can improve blood sugar control, reduce waist circumference and reduce chronic inflammation in overweight or obese people with type 2 diabetes (98).
The cons: One of the few disadvantages of this diet is that it reduces the consumption of some healthy carbohydrate sources such as bananas and potatoes.
Summary: The Zone diet is a low-glycemic diet. Some studies on weight loss are inconsistent, but this diet improves important health markers and reduces the risk of heart disease.
9. intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting alternates cyclically between periods of fasting and eating. Instead of restricting the foods you can eat, this diet controls when you eat these foods. As such, intermittent fasting can be considered more of a dietary regimen than a diet.
The most popular variations of intermittent fasting include:
- The 16/8 method: this method involves skipping breakfast and limiting the daily eating period to eight hours, which means fasting for the remaining 16 hours.
- The eat-stop-eat method: This method involves 24 hours of fasting once or twice a week on two non-consecutive days.
- The 5:2 diet: In this method, you limit your calorie intake to 500 to 600 kcal on two non-consecutive days. On the five remaining days, calorie intake is not restricted.
- The Warrior Diet: In this method, you only eat small amounts of raw fruit and vegetables during the day and a large meal in the evening.
How this diet works: Intermittent fasting is usually used for weight loss as it leads to calorie restriction relatively easily. Intermittent fasting can result in you eating fewer calories overall - as long as you don't overcompensate by eating more during the eating phases.

Having covered nutrition during fat loss in the first two parts of this article, this third part will look at training - cardio and resistance training - during fat loss and then take a closer look at some supplements that can support your fat loss efforts via different mechanisms.
Cardio
Some people love cardio training, while others hate it. Regardless of which side you're on, the only thing that matters is that you need to do cardio if you're serious about getting lean. When I say cardio, I'm not talking about taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Low intensity cardio will not give you what you are after. For serious fat loss, you need serious cardio.
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
Just as the name suggests, HIIT involves intervals of very high intensity alternating with breaks or periods of low intensity. Sprints are a good example of this. When you do sprints, you give it your all for a short period of time, followed by a recovery phase. This is repeated over and over again.
There are those who claim that HIIT is less effective than low-intensity cardio training over a longer period of time. Their reasoning is that most of the calories burned during a HIIT workout come from muscle glycogen stores (carbohydrates) and not from fat tissue. This is true, but not a bad thing. Scientific research has proven that it makes no difference whether stored carbohydrates or stored fat are used as an energy source. The only thing that matters is the number of total calories burned, and more calories are burned during a HIIT workout than during low to moderate intensity cardio.
Another reason that HIIT is so effective is that the post-workout fat burn is much higher with HIIT than with other types of cardio training. This basically means that even after your workout is over, your metabolism will be running like a blast furnace. This is the amazing fat-burning power of HIIT.
Another misconception about HIIT is that it can cause muscle loss. This is also not true. This myth is based on the fact that during a HIIT workout, a higher amount of calories burned come from amino acids (muscle mass) compared to low-intensity cardio. However, as long as HIIT training sessions are kept short enough, muscle loss is not a problem. It has even been shown that muscle growth and muscle maintenance can even be increased due to the effects that HIIT training has on the levels of anabolic hormones. A HIIT training session lasting just 10 to 15 minutes can increase testosterone levels and growth hormone levels for hours after training.
Since growth hormones are potent fat-burning hormones, this will further increase fat burning after the workout. Short duration sessions simply preserve muscle mass better than long cardio workouts. Compare the body of a sprinter with that of a marathon runner. Both are runners, but their bodies are drastically different.
The only downside to HIIT is that it can't be done as many times a week without the risk of overtraining. Because HIIT training has similar effects in many ways to training with weights, it can put a strain on the central nervous system. For this reason, HIIT should be limited to two training sessions of 10 to 20 minutes per week. These two workouts should be performed on days when you are not training with weights and should be treated like weight training sessions in terms of nutrition.
Cardio training with moderate intensity
Since only two HIIT workouts can be performed per week, another type of cardio workout is needed for the rest of your cardio workouts during the week. Moderate intensity cardio is the perfect type of cardio for every remaining cardio session you have to do during the week. This will burn a lot of calories without sacrificing much muscle tissue and burn fat via a different pathway than HIIT.
Moderate intensity cardio is performed at a moderate intensity for a moderate duration. The type of cardio training performed does not matter. The only thing that matters is that you choose a moderate intensity and maintain it for the entire duration of the training session. If you are not able to maintain the intensity throughout the entire training session, then the intensity was too high and must be reduced in the next training session. 65 to 70% of maximum intensity is best to burn an optimal amount of calories without reaching the point where the intensity becomes too high and the workout becomes more anaerobic than aerobic.
Performing cardio workouts can be extremely catabolic and therefore your cardio workouts should only be of moderate duration. While HIIT workouts should last 10 to 20 minutes, moderate intensity cardio workouts should be in the 25 to 30 minute range. Once a cardio session exceeds this duration, the cumulative effect of muscle tissue breakdown becomes a serious concern.
How many training sessions per week?
We have already established that 2 HIIT training sessions of 10 to 20 minutes duration should be performed per week. These workouts should tend to start in the 10 minute range and increase in duration as needed.
The amount and duration of moderate intensity cardio workouts will depend more on individual needs. If fat loss is not happening fast enough with just 2 HIIT workouts per week, then 1 to 2 moderate intensity cardio workouts per week need to be added. Start with just 1 to 2 of these workouts per week. If necessary, the number can be increased to up to 4 training sessions per week. Simply increase the amount and duration of your moderate intensity cardio workouts as needed to keep the fat loss going. However, your cardio training sessions should not exceed 35 minutes.
Cardio training in a fasting state
Over the years, fasted cardio has become a very popular method for fat loss. Fasting cardio means that you do cardio on an empty stomach in the morning after waking up, before breakfast. The reason this has become a popular fat loss method is because fasted cardio increases the percentage of calories that come from fat while minimizing the amount of glycogen used for energy. However, as we will see later, it does not matter whether the energy comes from fat or carbohydrates - fat loss will be the same regardless of the substrate.
Cardio training in a fasting state is not only not beneficial, but can even have disastrous consequences. Fasting cardio may result in a higher use of fat, but it also results in a higher use of amino acids, which equates to more muscle breakdown. And as if that wasn't enough, scientific research has also shown that fasted cardio training results in far fewer total calories burned during the training session. This simply means that cardio training in a fasted state will result in less fat loss compared to cardio training in a nourished state. So make sure you have some food in your body before you do your cardio workout.
Training with weights
Training with weights can seem like an afterthought in many fat loss plans. This is a big mistake, as working out with weights burns a large amount of calories and increases your metabolic rate for hours after your workout. Many people mistakenly believe that the best way to lose fat is to stop training with weights and focus on cardio. While this will cause you to lose weight, most of it will not be fat.
With a fat loss plan, it is important to make a clear distinction that the goal is not just weight loss, but fat loss. If you stop training with weights, you will burn fewer calories, have a slower metabolism and less muscle tissue. This is not the ideal recipe for looking good.
The importance of muscle for fat loss
In a fat loss plan, it is important to build and maintain as much muscle mass as possible. There are many people who think that training with weights will make them look bulky. This is very unusual for a natural exerciser. When someone looks bulky, the culprit is usually too much fat and not too much muscle mass.
Muscle tissue is biologically active tissue, which means it consumes calories even at rest. Some studies have shown that 1 pound of muscle mass can burn up to 50 Kcal per day. Although more recent research has shown that this figure is probably far too high, it still means that building more muscle mass means you can eat significantly more per day while continuing to lose fat. This is one of the many reasons why it is so important to maintain muscle tissue during fat loss. Training with weights for fat loss
Now that we know that training with weights is essential for optimal fat loss, we need to make sure we're doing it right. Somehow it has become a "generally accepted fact" that you need to use light weights and lots of repetitions for fat loss. But this is nothing more than another myth that simply isn't true.
Training with weights is just as important for maintaining existing muscle mass as it is for building muscle mass. Think of it this way: the best way to build muscle is also the best way to maintain muscle. Using lighter weights will do nothing more than slow down your metabolic rate and sacrifice muscle and strength.
The best approach to training with weights while dieting is to train with primarily heavy multi-joint exercises, working each muscle group one to two times per week. If you neglect any part of your body, it's just a missed opportunity to burn extra calories - both during and after your workout. A well-balanced weight training program should include heavy weights and low repetitions as well as light weights and high repetitions. Both methods will build muscle, but through different pathways and for this reason it is important to include both styles of training in your program.
Abdominal training
Walk into any gym and you'll see dozens of people doing endless sets and reps of different ab exercises. If you take a closer look at these people, you'll notice that none of them have visible abs. And there is a reason for this: No amount of ab workouts will allow you to see your abs.
Ab workouts don't burn fat around your midsection. Ab workouts will only work the abdominal muscles that are underneath the fat that covers them. The only way to see these muscles is to lose the layers of fat through diet, cardio and a workout with weights that cover the abs.
An abdominal workout will generate a muscular abdominal muscle area, which will make your midsection more attractive once the fat covering it is gone. Treat the abs like any other muscle group and train them once or twice a week. This, combined with the right diet and cardio training, will put you on the road to the coveted six-pack.
Supplements
Whey protein
Whey protein is best known for its ability to accelerate muscle growth and recovery, which is crucial during any fat loss plan. Many of the benefits of whey protein are due to its fast digestion rate and high concentration of the amino acid leucine. It is important to remember that anything used to build muscle will also maintain muscle mass during the diet.
While the benefits of whey protein for muscle growth are well known, most people are unaware of the uses of whey protein while dieting. Studies have shown that subjects who consumed whey protein lost more fat and maintained more muscle mass for the same calorie intake compared to subjects who did not consume whey protein. Whey protein improves metabolic function and increases insulin sensitivity.
All these benefits make whey protein a must during a diet. Whey protein should be consumed directly after training due to its rapid digestibility. Whey protein can of course also be used at other times of the day to meet protein requirements.
EFA (essential fatty acids)
Essential fatty acids are - as the name suggests - essential for the human body because they play an important role in many biological processes. Essential fatty acids differ from other fats in that the body cannot produce them itself. This means that essential fatty acids must be obtained from food. If you do not consume enough essential fatty acids, the body will perceive that it does not have the nutrients it needs to function properly. As a result, it will hold on to its stored fat. However, this is only one of the reasons why essential fatty acids are so important.
Essential fatty acids have a wide range of applications, including the following:

The correct use of caffeine

Caffeine also has significant effects on the adrenal glands in the adrenal cortex. The adrenal glands regulate a number of hormone levels in the body, including the levels of the "fight or flight" hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. Caffeine causes these hormones to be released, giving you a short-term energy boost. However, problems arise when the stimulation of the adrenal glands becomes chronic. This eventually leads to adrenal exhaustion - a kind of burnout of the adrenal glands that can affect energy levels, metabolism and digestion.
Even though caffeine is an excellent tool, it should be used in moderation. Low carbohydrate diets are very effective when it comes to weight loss. This is a fact that has been proven by a large number of studies. As with any diet, many people stop losing weight on low-carb diets before they reach their desired weight.

1. you lose fat, but you don't realize it

If you can't control yourself around unhealthy foods, then you may be suffering from an eating disorder. In this case, it's a good idea to cut all junk food out of your life completely.
13. you eat too many calories
At the end of the day, it's the amount of calories consumed that counts. One of the main reasons that low-carb and ketogenic diets are so effective is that they reduce appetite and make people subconsciously eat less.
If you're doing everything right but still not losing weight, try counting your calories for a while. Aim for a calorie deficit of 500 kcal per day, which in theory should result in you losing 1 pound of weight per week (although this doesn't always work in practice).
14. you don't have realistic expectations
At the end of the day, weight loss will take time. It's a marathon - not a sprint. Losing 1 to 2 pounds per week is a realistic goal. Some people will lose weight faster, while for others it will take longer.
However, it's important to keep in mind that not everyone can look like a fitness model. At some point, you will reach a healthy set point weight that may be higher than what you initially hoped for.
15 You've been on a diet for too long
I don't think it's a good idea to stay in a calorie deficit for too long. The leanest people in the world (bodybuilders and fitness models) never do this. They alternate cyclically between building muscle and dieting.
If you maintain a calorie deficit for many months (or even years), your metabolic rate will eventually drop. If you've been dieting for a long time, a two-month phase during which you aim to maintain your weight and build some muscle might be what you need to get your dieting progress back on track.
