What is KSM-66® Ashwagandha?
KSM-66® Ashwagandha is the most broadly studied extract in the world. It is a patented full-spectrum extract obtained exclusively from the root of Withania somnifera. Full-spectrum means: the natural profile of the plant compounds is preserved instead of isolating single compounds. Leaves do not go into the extract.
The ashwagandha extract KSM-66® is obtained without chemical solvents. The process works with water and milk alone, following the classical Ayurvedic preparation. Exactly this combination, full-spectrum plus solvent-free, makes KSM-66® ashwagandha a branded raw material in premium quality.
The plant behind the extract is known as the sleepberry. Ashwagandha is one of the best-known adaptogens of the Ayurvedic tradition1. Adaptogens are plants meant to support the body through demanding phases.
What does "standardised to 5% withanolides" mean?
Withanolides are the characteristic plant compounds of the sleepberry and are considered the value-defining constituents of an ashwagandha extract2. Standardised means: every batch is measured by HPLC and adjusted to the same content.
Each capsule contains 300 mg of standardised KSM-66® extract with 5% withanolides. That makes 15 mg of withanolides per capsule, the same in every batch. Your next tub delivers exactly the same amount as this one. With ground root powder, the withanolide content varies from harvest to harvest. That is why there is usually no number on those labels at all.
KSM-66® or plain ashwagandha: what is the difference?
The difference lies in concentration and control. A KSM-66® extract bundles the plant compounds of the root and states them in milligrams. Ground root powder is simply dried, crushed root without a fixed content.
That is why the big number on some tubs is misleading. 2,000 mg of powder sounds like more than 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract, but delivers less of what matters. What counts is not the amount of plant material, but the amount of withanolides.
Ashwagandha capsules: KSM-66® extract instead of root powder
| Feature | KSM-66® capsules | Root powder |
| Form | standardised full-spectrum extract | ground root |
| Withanolide content | 5%, HPLC-verified | usually not stated |
| Same in every batch | yes | no, varies |
| Plant part | root only | often root and leaves |
| Capsules per day | 1 | often 2 to 4 |
If you are looking for the even more concentrated extract, you will find it here: Ashwagandha Shoden® with 35% withanolides. KSM-66® has the broader study base, Shoden® the higher concentration. Both have their place.
One capsule a day, 120 capsules, four months
One capsule daily covers your daily amount. 120 capsules are thus 120 full daily doses and last you four months. Many products on the market need two capsules for the same daily amount; there, your tub is empty after two months.
The 300 mg are no random value. The published studies on this ashwagandha root extract used 250 to 600 mg daily3,4. Your daily capsule sits right in this corridor.
No measuring, no calculating, no powder in a glass.
When do you take KSM-66® Ashwagandha?
Take one capsule daily, ideally with a meal and with plenty of fluid. With a meal, the capsule sits lightly in the stomach. Choose the time of day by your goal.
- In the evening, if you want to go into the night more calmly. In the study on stressed participants, sleep quality improved compared with placebo4
- In the morning, if you want to get through dense workdays with more composure
- After training, if recovery is your topic
More important than the time of day is your consistency. KSM-66® ashwagandha works through daily repetition, not through the single intake. The studies ran over eight to ten weeks3,4. Count in weeks, not days. Whoever stops after five days has never really tested the extract.
What do customers take Ashwagandha KSM-66® for?
The most common reasons are more calm in dense phases, better sleep and recovery after training. Ashwagandha is the best-known anti-stress classic from Ayurveda, and KSM-66® is the extract with the most research behind it.
In a placebo-controlled study, stressed participants took this full-spectrum root extract daily for 60 days. They showed better values on all stress scales than the placebo group3. A second study on stressed, healthy adults came to the same picture over eight weeks and additionally found less inner restlessness and better sleep quality4.
In both studies, the cortisol level was lower than under placebo at the same time3,4. Cortisol is the hormone your body releases under strain.
For athletes, another side counts. Hard training is a strain on the body, and in a study with eight weeks of strength training, participants recovered better under ashwagandha than under placebo5. That speaks for physical performance in an athlete's everyday life. That is why the tub sits next to the creatine for many.
Keep your expectations realistic. Some notice a first change after 10 to 14 days; it becomes clearer from the fourth week. Ashwagandha KSM-66® does not show itself on day two.
Who are these capsules made for?
For people who want to keep a clear head in a packed everyday life: at work, at university, in training. Many are looking for exactly that: more mental clarity on dense workdays and calmer evenings. As an Ashwagandha KSM-66® supplement, the capsule is as simple as it gets; one a day covers everything. Athletes add it in hard training blocks, because recovery is part of the programme there. If you prefer a highly concentrated product, go for Shoden®.
Pure ashwagandha root extract: two ingredients, nothing else
The ingredient list of these capsules has exactly two entries: ashwagandha root extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No filler, no anti-caking agent, no silicon dioxide. The capsule shell is plant-based, not made of gelatine.
That is not a given. Many capsules stretch the extract with rice flour or cellulose; others add vitamins so an effect can be printed on the label. Here you pay for the root, not for the filling.
The product is made in Germany, under controlled conditions and lab-tested. The raw material KSM-66® is a licensed branded raw material, not nameless powder from the commodity trade. You can see this quality on the label: the brand name and the verified amount, capsule for capsule.
Store the tub cool, dry and protected from light. That keeps the KSM-66® extract stable over the full four months.
One capsule, a sip of water, done: a supplement does not get simpler.
Goes well with: Magnesium Bisglycinate for the evening, Kreatin Tera Caps® for training and Ashwagandha Shoden® if you like it highly concentrated.
