Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are essential, fat-soluble vitamins that are involved in numerous vital functions in the body. The two vitamins work synergistically and potentiate each other's effects (1), especially when it comes to maintaining bones and teeth (2).

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also known as "calciferol" and is produced endogenously when ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight hit the skin, triggering the body's own vitamin D synthesis. Studies have shown that vitamin D, along with vitamin K2 and calcium, is needed to maintain healthy and strong bones and teeth (1,2,3). In addition to its important functions in the area of bones, vitamin D is also needed to maintain optimal muscle function. In the study setting, it promoted the build-up of muscle mass and was able to positively influence the coordination of the muscles in the test group (4). In addition, vitamin D is also crucial for the optimal functioning of the immune system and has been shown to have a major influence on the general well-being of participants in various studies (5).

Vitamin D3 is produced by the body itself under the influence of the sun's rays. This fact falsely gives many people the impression that vitamin D deficiency is relatively rare in the population. However, the exact opposite is the case in Germany. Large-scale studies have shown that a large proportion of society suffers from** a more or less pronounced vitamin D def iciency** (7).

Vitamin D deficiency can have a variety of consequences, some of which are very serious. The initial symptoms of such a deficiency are usually quite unspecific and include things like tiredness, listlessness, reduced performance, depressive moods and an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases such as colds and flu. A more pronounced and longer-lasting vitamin D deficiency can sooner or later lead to a reduction in bone mass. Studies have shown that this reduction can result in unstable and brittle bones, and thus in an increased risk of injury and some other consequences for the test group(8).

Vitamin K2

Among other things, vitamin K2 has a positive effect on blood clotting (9). In addition, it also plays a decisive role in calcium metabolism via the activation of so-called GLA proteins. The latter is particularly important for maintaining stable and healthy bones (1,10). At the same time, however, a healthy calcium metabolism is also crucial for a healthy cardiovascular system. An optimally functioning cardiovascular system with elastic blood vessels not only improves general endurance (11). Your muscle building is also decisively influenced by how well your blood circulation can supply the muscles with nutrients and oxygen.

Summary:

Both vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 have a major influence on health and the maintenance of many important functions in our body. They act synergistically and reinforce each other. This makes supplementation with both vitamins in a single preparation unequally useful.
