Prevention of cardiovascular diseases and dementia

Betaine has the special ability to break down homocysteine. Homocysteine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, i.e. it cannot be used to form vital proteins. On the contrary: homocysteine can actually cause a great deal of damage in the human body.

If there is too much homocysteine in our body, it can damage the blood vessels and lead to cardiovascular disease. In addition, too much homocysteine can contribute to diseases such as depression, dementia, eclampsia, neural tube defects and macular degeneration. It is therefore all the more important to keep the blood level of homocysteine as low as possible.

Betaine TMG can counteract this. As homocysteine is formed from the essential amino acid methionine, it can be converted back to methionine by methylation. This requires a methyl group. This is precisely what betaine can provide.

Betaine TMG: a wide range of applications

In addition to lowering homocysteine levels, betaine can also influence various metabolic processes. Animal studies have shown that taking betaine can alleviate digestive problems. In the experiments, betaine intake led to increased activity of the digestive enzymes amylase, lipase, trypsin and chemotrypsin, which causes this effect (1). In one study, betaine was able to successfully support the liver in processing fat (2).

Betaine TMG is also of particular interest to athletes. Several studies show that the intake of betaine reduces the depletion of energy reserves and promotes an increase in performance and the build-up of muscle mass (3).
