What is in this L-arginine powder?

L-arginine hydrochloride is the salt form of the semi-essential amino acid L-arginine and an important building block of proteins. The body uses it as a starting material for the formation of nitric oxide (NO)¹⁾, a signaling molecule that is involved in the circulatory system and in the distribution of nutrients during physical exertion²⁾. This is precisely why the amino acid has been an integral part of many pre-workout stacks for years.

Why the HCL form? The pure base form is strongly alkaline (pH ~11), tastes bitter and only dissolves moderately in water. The hydrochloride neutralizes the pH value, tastes almost neutral and dissolves without leaving any residue. If you stir the powder into a shake every day, you will notice the difference with the first sip.

HCL or L-arginine base powder - what's the difference?

L-arginine is available as HCL, base and AAKG. All three provide the same amino acid, but differ significantly in practice:

PropertyHCLBaseAAKG
Pure content~83 %~98-100 %~67 %
SolubilityVery goodModerateGood
FlavorAlmost neutralBitterSlightly acidic
pH valueNeutralAlkaline (pH ~11)Neutral
BioavailabilityHighMediumMedium
Gastric toleranceVery goodMay irritateGood

On paper, L-arginine base powder looks the best with ~98 % pure content. In practice it tastes bitter, dissolves poorly and can cause problems for sensitive stomachs. AAKG (arginine alpha-ketoglutarate) combines the amino acid with alpha-ketoglutaric acid, but only provides ~67% pure L-arginine per serving.

If you take arginine powder every day before training, you don't want a bitter powder with sediment in the jar. The HCL dissolves without residue, without a sandy texture and without an aftertaste. HCL is the more practical choice for daily intake.

Who is the powder suitable for?

The powder is aimed at active people who want to incorporate L-arginine into their daily routine:

  • Strength athletes: during intense sets, the need for nitric oxide increases. L-arginine provides the starting material for this¹⁾. If you want to maximize the effect, take the portion 30 minutes before training on an empty stomach.
  • Endurance athletes: During prolonged exercise, the distribution of nutrients to the muscles plays a decisive role²⁾. The powder dissolves residue-free in the drinking bottle, even on the go.
  • Fitness beginners: Do you want to test how you react to the amino acid first? As a single-ingredient powder, you can dose yourself to the exact gram. Start with 2-3 g and increase as required.
  • Athletes with sensitive stomachs: Many base powders irritate the stomach because their pH value is ~11. HCL is pH-neutral and can therefore be taken on an empty stomach before training.

Intake - how to get the most out of it

Before strength training

Preparation is straightforward: stir 3-5 g into 200-300 ml of water or your shake around 30 minutes before training. The HCL dissolves without residue, without lumps and without sediment. This gives the body enough time to absorb the amino acid.

On non-training days

3 g in the morning on an empty stomach. The active ingredient is absorbed more quickly than with a meal.

In combination with L-citrulline

A popular stack in weight training: this powder together with L-citrulline. Citrulline is converted to L-arginine in the body and thus prolongs the availability of the NO precursor. Proven combination: 3 g HCL powder + 6 g citrulline malate before training. Other amino acids such as BCAA can also be easily integrated into the stack.

Beginners vs. advanced

Start with 3 g daily and increase to 5 g if necessary. If you already use other sources of NO (e.g. beet juice or citrulline), you can adjust the daily amount accordingly.

Quality & production

GN Laboratories produces this supplement exclusively in Germany. GMP, HACCP and IFS are not marketing labels here, they mean something: Every production step is documented, every batch is traceable.

What distinguishes NanoPure® from budget powders: Not a single laboratory test at product launch and then never again. Every batch undergoes independent tests for purity, residues and heavy metals. The powder is obtained through plant-based fermentation, is free from genetic engineering and is 100% vegan.

Transparency is the production standard here, not a promise. You get a powder where you can trace every step from the raw material to the finished tin.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How much L-arginine should I take per day?
3-5 g per day. Start with the lower amount and increase if well tolerated. One heaped teaspoon with the enclosed measuring spoon corresponds to about 3 g.
What is the difference between HCL and base?
HCL dissolves without leaving any residue, has hardly any taste of its own and is easy on the stomach. Although the base variant provides ~98 % pure L-arginine (vs. ~83 % with HCL), it tastes distinctly bitter and often leaves residue in the glass. For daily intake as a powder, the hydrochloride is the better choice.
Can the powder be combined with L-citrulline?
Yes, the combination is widely used in competitive sports. Citrulline is converted into the same amino acid in the body and is a useful supplement. You can find our L-citrulline malate in the citrulline collection.
Who is the supplement suitable for?
Especially for strength and endurance athletes who want to optimize their pre-workout routine. The product is vegan, gluten-free and free from additives. Also suitable for people with sensitive stomachs, as the HCL form is pH-neutral.
Is the powder really additive-free?
Yes, the ingredient list consists of a single ingredient: 100 % L-arginine hydrochloride. No flavors, no flavorings, no fillers, no excipients such as magnesium stearate or titanium dioxide.
