Iron is an essential mineral whose compound forms with nitrogen and sulphur have contributed to the evolution of life and enabled the release of oxygen into the atmosphere through photosynthesis.

Red meat, fish, legumes and dark green leafy vegetables, for example, contain significant amounts of iron. Much of the iron in animal foods is present as part of complex proteins such as hemoglobin, which is involved in the transport of oxygen. Hemoglobin consists of globin protein and a heme group. The porphyrin ring of the heme contains the iron to which oxygen binds.

In plant foods, iron is present in a different way, not as part of the heme. This difference affects the absorption properties of iron, and as a result, animal iron has better bioavailability than plant iron. Although many other factors influence iron absorption, all of these can be positively influenced.

This is where vitamin C comes into play. Not only does it help protect cells from oxidative stress, but it also improves iron absorption, which is why we've included it in our formula.

Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is mainly found in animal foods such as meat, fish, dairy products and eggs, which is why people on a vegan diet should make sure they get enough vitamin B12. For this reason, it was important to us to use a vegan variant when we developed Iron Professional.

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is found in many foods, with substantial amounts in dark green leafy vegetables, legumes and nuts. Our product contains folic acid in the active form of calcium L-methylfolate.
