What is NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine) and why is it supplemented?

You've heard of NAC, but what's really behind it? N-acetyl-cysteine is the stabilized form of L-cysteine. Stabilized means: an acetyl group protects the amino acid from oxidizing in the stomach. Without this protection, a large portion is lost before your body can use it.

After absorption, the ingredient is converted into L-cysteine. L-cysteine, in turn, is one of the three building blocks for glutathione, the most abundant tripeptide in your cells. That's why the acetylated form has become the preferred variant in supplementation.

N-acetyl-cysteine or L-cysteine — where's the difference?

Both ultimately deliver L-cysteine. But the path there differs considerably.

PropertyNACL-cysteine
StabilityHigh (acetylated, oxidation-resistant)Low (reacts quickly with oxygen)
BioavailabilityHighLimited
Supplement formStandard for capsules and tabletsRarely as a standalone supplement
Glutathione precursorYes (via L-cysteine)Yes (directly)

The pure form creates disulfide bridges on contact with oxygen. That sounds like a chemistry textbook, but it simply means: part of the ingredient is lost before it reaches the intestine.

The acetylated variant bypasses this problem. The protective group keeps the molecule stable until absorption. Only then is it converted and made available for glutathione synthesis.

Who is NAC suitable for as a supplement?

You train 4-5 times per week and notice that recovery takes longer than it used to. Intense training uses up sulfur-containing amino acids faster than most diets can replenish. L-cysteine is one of the three building blocks for glutathione, and it's precisely this pool that empties first under high strain. These highly dosed capsules deliver 500 mg of the stabilized precursor each. Two on training days, one on rest days. You're in control.

You're building a stack and don't want to leave the glutathione base to chance. In biohacker circles, the GlyNAC stack (N-acetyl-cysteine + glycine) is one of the most frequently recommended combinations. Long-term users value the compound as a fixed part of their daily routine. With 120 capsules per container, you're covered for four months without needing to reorder.

You read the ingredient list first with every supplement. Then you won't be searching long here: N-acetyl-L-cysteine, capsule shell made of HPMC. Done. No magnesium stearate, no fillers, no fine print. Vegan, lab-tested, made in Germany.

How are the capsules taken?

One capsule contains 500 mg of N-acetyl-L-cysteine. The recommended intake is 1 to 2 capsules daily.

Many products on the market deliver only 250 or 300 mg per capsule. With 500 mg of highly dosed N-acetyl-cysteine each, you need fewer capsules per day and keep full control over your dosage. One capsule or two, you decide. Depending on what the rest of your stack looks like.

Best taken between meals with plenty of water. The capsule size is compact. No gagging, no dissolving required.

Quality and manufacturing

GN Laboratories produces in Germany. In concrete terms, that means: production according to German food standards, independent laboratory testing for purity and content, documented batch traceability.

The capsule shell is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is fully vegan and free of gelatin. As for the ingredients: what's on the label is what's inside. No fillers, no hidden additives.

Each of the containers holds 120 capsules, individually sealed to preserve product quality. With one capsule daily, that lasts four months. With two capsules, you have a two-month supply, at a per-capsule price of under 20 cents. Short delivery time within Germany; you'll find reviews further down on the page.

Frequently asked questions about N-Acetyl L-Cysteine

What is NAC used for?

N-acetyl cysteine is used to supply the body with the stabilized form of L-cysteine. The amino acid is a precursor of glutathione and is a sulphur-containing compound. In sports nutrition, the compound is an integral part of many supplement stacks.

How much NAC can I take per day?

The usual recommended daily intake is 500 to 1,000 mg. One capsule provides 500 mg, so you can take 1 or 2 capsules per day as required.

What is the difference between NAC and L-cysteine?

The acetylated form is the stabilized variant. The pure form oxidizes quickly and loses its bioavailability. For this reason, the N-acetyl form is used almost exclusively in supplementation.

Are the capsules vegan?

Yes, the capsule shell consists of HPMC (vegetable). The product contains no animal ingredients and no unnecessary additives.

What should I look out for when buying NAC?

Firstly, the dosage per capsule: 500 mg offers more flexibility than higher-dose products. Secondly, the purity: laboratory-tested and without fillers. Thirdly, the production: Made in Germany with documented quality assurance.

Can NAC be combined with other supplements?

Yes, in practice the amino acid is often taken together with vitamin C, zinc or glycine. Many stack users also combine it with glutathione or alpha-lipoic acid.
