What is citrulline malate and how can citrulline malate maximize the pump?

Citrulline malate is one of the three amino acids of the urea cycle that occurs naturally in the human body. In weight training and bodybuilding, citrulline is primarily known for its blood circulation-promoting properties, which can drastically increase the pump effect during training (1). However, citrulline also has a number of other benefits that any athlete can potentially benefit from to improve recovery and performance (2). Citrulline works by acting as a substrate for the arginine - nitric oxide synthase - nitric oxide pathway and simultaneously stimulating the production of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (3). As a messenger substance, nitric oxide causes the smooth muscle tissue of the veins to relax. In a study, this in turn resulted in a widening of the veins and thus a potentially maximized blood flow (4). According to scientific studies, a maximum increase in blood flow to the muscles is synonymous with a maximum supply of oxygen. But also energy-supplying nutrients and the body's own anabolic hormones. At the same time, the maximum increase in blood flow also improves the removal of toxic metabolic products that are inevitably produced during intensive training sessions (5). This is so important because as the amount of these toxic waste products increases, the contractility of the muscles continues to decrease (6). As an added bonus, nitric oxide improves muscle contractile function while increasing glucose uptake into the muscles (7). ATP production and therefore energy supply during exercise is another factor that can benefit from citrulline supplementation (8). This effect is particularly important because citrulline also helps to reduce the toxic ammonia produced during training (9)

Studies have shown that all these factors can lead to more repetitions per set or more training sets per session being possible (1,4,5). As a result, the intake of citrulline was shown in one study to lead to an improved growth stimulus during training (2,4).

How can citrulline malate accelerate recovery and maximize muscle growth?

After training, improved blood circulation inevitably results in a better supply to the muscles. Oxygen, nutrients and the body's own anabolic hormones reach the muscle cells faster due to an increased blood supply. This in turn results in faster and better regeneration (1). Citrulline can also reduce the occurrence of muscle soreness after training (10), which means that a new growth stimulus can be set more quickly. Citrulline can also potentially support muscle building through several independent effects. It increases the rate of muscle protein synthesis, so that more muscle protein and therefore more muscle mass could be built up in subjects in various studies (2,4). The increase in muscle volume due to improved blood circulation also had direct muscle-building effects in test subjects (8). Last but not least, citrulline significantly stimulates blood circulation, resulting in stretching of the fascia. Scientific studies have shown that such repeated stretching of the fascia has direct anabolic, muscle-building effects (8).

Wenn ich mir einen Pump Wirkstoff aussuchen müsste wäre es Citrullin. wirkt einfach besser als alle anderen und wer mal Arginin getrunken hat weiss wo das Problem damit ist haha
