What does your body need iron for?

Iron is an essential trace element your body cannot produce itself and which must therefore be supplied by food or in the form of supplements.p> In the human body, iron fulfils a wide range of vital tasks and functions. Iron is an important component of the red blood pigment haemoglobin, which is needed for the transport of oxygen from your lungs to the different tissue types of your body, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide from the cells of the body. Without sufficient amounts of iron, haematopoiesis and thus your body's oxygen supply will be impaired.

In addition, iron is part of a variety of different enzymes that – amongst other functions – play an important role in your immune system and in fighting infections and pathogens.

It might be interesting for athletes that iron is needed to store oxygen in your muscles, where it is used by your body’s energy metabolism that provides the energy needed for intensive muscle contractions. But this is not the only role, iron plays in your body’s energy metabolism. Iron is also required for the transfer of electrons, which is a basic physical process without which the entire energy metabolism could not function.

Apart from this, iron can also contribute to a reduction of fatigue and exhaustion, as well as a normal cognitive function (1).

What are the consequences of an iron deficiency?

Studies conclude that in Germany about 14% of all men and 58% of all women do not consume enough iron (2). In addition, the iron requirements may be increased due to various factors, including blood loss (menstruation in women, blood donation, injuries), gastrointestinal diseases that can reduce iron absorption, an increased iron requirement during pregnancy and an increased excretion of iron in intensively training athletes.

The first symptoms of an iron deficiency include chronic fatigue, a feeling of weakness, a decline in athletic performance, headaches, forgetfulness, gastrointestinal complaints, hair loss, dull hair, brittle nails, dizziness, pale skin and mucous membranes, and an increased susceptibility to infections due to an impaired immune function. An advanced iron deficiency can lead to anaemia and disturbances of the regulation of your body temperature.

What makes an iron deficiency so treacherous is the fact that it is not felt immediately, but only when your body's iron reserves are depleted. Once such a condition has occurred, it can take a long time until normal iron levels can be restored in your body with the help of iron supplements.
