Great Leopard's Bane

The Great Leopard's Bane, botanically Doronicum pardalianches, belongs to the family of composites (Asteraceae) and is a perennial, herbaceous plant with striking golden-yellow flowers. Originally native to the mountain regions of southern Europe, it has meanwhile also settled in parts of Central Europe – preferably at shady forest edges, on stream banks, and in moist floodplain landscapes. Its creeping, widely branched rootstock makes it a robust ground cover that can spread quickly under favorable conditions. In the past, the plant was occasionally cultivated as an ornamental plant or traditionally used – among other things because of its striking flower and its kinship with other leopard's bane species used in herbal medicine, such as Doronicum austriacum or Doronicum grandiflorum.

What health benefits does the Great Leopard's Bane offer?

The Great Leopard's Bane itself has so far been little investigated in modern phytotherapy, yet its botanical kinship with other species of the genus Doronicum points to a possible therapeutic potential. Traditionally, it was drawn upon – mostly in folk medicine – for the following purposes:

  • Anti-inflammatory action: Extracts of the plant were applied in folk medicine for external inflammation or skin irritation.
  • Stimulation of the circulation: Individual applications in traditional herbal medicine point to a possible tonic effect in cases of physical exhaustion.
  • Digestion-promoting: Similar to other composites, it was occasionally used for stomach complaints.

Scientifically sound studies on these effects have, however, largely been lacking so far, which is why more research is needed in order to be able to make conclusive statements about the effects. Nevertheless, one property is worth mentioning:

  • Neuroprotective effect: Current studies suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction from the roots of the plant has neuroprotective properties. It could reduce oxidative stress in nerve cells and thus potentially contribute to the preservation of brain health (1).

How does the Great Leopard's Bane work in the body?

The exact pharmacological effect has so far not been sufficiently researched. Similar species, however, contain various secondary plant compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones, essential oils, and flavonoids. Whether and to what extent Doronicum pardalianches likewise contains these has so far not been conclusively clarified scientifically.

Are there risks or side effects?

  • Risk of confusion: Because of its membership in the family of composites, there is a certain risk of confusion with other, possibly toxic plants.
  • Allergic reactions: As with many composites, sensitive individuals can react allergically to the plant – in particular with external application.
  • Not suitable for consumption: Because of insufficient studies on internal use and possible toxic constituents, independent consumption is to be advised against.
  • Not sufficiently researched: Because of the insufficient evidence regarding the effects, an application should under no circumstances take place without medical supervision.

Conclusion

The Great Leopard's Bane is a striking wild plant with ornamental value and historical use in folk medicine. Scientifically, its benefit has so far hardly been proven, and its application should therefore take place with caution. Its botanical kinship with better-known leopard's bane species, however, suggests an interesting potential – provided that future studies specifically devote themselves to its composition and effects.
