Candle Bush
The Candle Bush (Senna alata, formerly Cassia alata), also known under names such as Röhren-Kassie, Fackelstrauch, or Ringelblumenkassie, is a tropical medicinal plant from the legume family (Fabaceae). The plant originally comes from tropical regions of the Americas but is now naturalized in many parts of Africa, Asia, and Australia. Characteristic are its bright yellow, candle-like flower spikes and the large, pinnate leaves. In traditional medicine, the Röhren-Kassie has long been used for various purposes – particularly for skin care and against fungal infections. Its striking appearance and comparatively robust growth habit also make it a popular ornamental plant in tropical gardens. The medicinally relevant components are found mainly in the leaves and flowers.
What benefits does the Candle Bush offer for health? In various traditional healing systems, especially in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, the Candle Bush is valued for its health-promoting properties. Some of the effects already investigated in studies are:
- Antifungal effect: The plant is traditionally used for skin fungus (particularly tinea). Modern studies confirm the antifungal activity of extracts, including against Candida and dermatophyte species (1,2).
- Antibacterial effects: Investigations show that leaf extracts also contain antibacterial agents that could potentially act against skin infections (1,2,3,4).
- Antioxidant properties: Compounds from the plant showed an antioxidant effect in scientific investigations (2,4).
- Anti-inflammatory properties: Initial research findings point to a mild anti-inflammatory effect of the flavonoids and anthraquinones it contains (3,4).
- Laxative effect: In some cultures, the Röhren-Kassie is also used internally in very small doses – among other things to promote digestion or as a mild laxative. Particular caution is required here, however (5,6).
How does the Candle Bush work in the body? The plant's medicinal effect is attributed above all to its bioactive constituents. Particularly important here are anthraquinones, flavonoids, and tannins. These substances have, among others, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects and – at higher doses – also a laxative effect (1–5).
Are there risks or side effects?
- Caution with internal use: Due to the laxative effect of the anthraquinones, the plant should only be taken with great caution – especially over longer periods.
- Skin reactions possible: In people with sensitive skin, external use can lead to irritation. A prior tolerance test is recommended.
- Not suitable for pregnant women: Due to the incomplete data situation and a possible effect on the uterus, use during pregnancy should be avoided.
Conclusion The Candle Bush is a striking tropical medicinal plant with a long tradition in skin care and for fungal infections. Its effects are increasingly being investigated scientifically as well, with the antifungal and antibacterial properties of the leaves being of particular interest.
