Bottle Tree
The Bottle Tree, botanically Brachychiton rupestris, is an evergreen tree from the mallow family (Malvaceae). It originally comes from the dry regions of Australia, where it has adapted to the extreme climatic conditions through its characteristic, bulbously thickened trunk base. This shape serves to store water and makes it a survival artist during long dry periods. The tree reaches a height of up to 20 meters and has a dense, rounded crown with narrow, glossy leaves. In its native range, it is valued as a shade provider as well as an ornamental plant and an ecologically valuable component of the landscape. In addition to its striking appearance, the Bottle Tree is traditionally used in various areas – from livestock feed to the use of its fibers and seeds in natural medicine. The plant is also gaining relevance in research.
What health benefits does the Bottle Tree offer?
Traditionally as well as in modern investigations, various properties have been attributed to the Bottle Tree that make it interesting from a health perspective as well. However, the research to date is not conclusive enough to make definitive statements about its effects. Here are some of the findings so far. However, these should be viewed critically and are not readily transferable:
- Anti-inflammatory effect: Extracts from the leaves of B. rupestris have been shown to reduce the release of elastase from neutrophils, an important indicator of inflammation (1).
- Antioxidant effect: Studies suggest an antioxidant effect originating from the plant's constituents (2)
- Antidiabetic effect: Investigations showed a blood-sugar-lowering effect that could have a positive impact on diabetic problems (3)
How does the Bottle Tree work in the body?
The effect is mainly attributable to the nutrient density and secondary plant compounds. Using liquid chromatography combined with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, various compounds were identified, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. Here too, however, more studies are needed to better understand the effects.
Are there any risks or side effects?
- Limited research: The scientific data on medicinal effects is scarce so far.
- Seeds only in moderation: As with many wild plants, seeds should not be consumed in excessive amounts.
- No known serious side effects: In its traditionally used form, the tree is considered safe.
- Only under medical supervision: Due to the insufficient body of studies, use should always take place under medical supervision
