Esculin

Esculin is a naturally occurring coumarin derivative that is contained above all in the horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and in some other plant species. Chemically it belongs to the glycosides, since it consists of a coumarin derivative (esculetin) and a sugar component (glucose). The substance is known for its fluorescent properties, which are used in microbiology, as well as for its significance in phytochemistry and traditional herbal medicine.

  • Cardioprotective effect: Studies suggest a cardioprotective effect that emanates from esculin. This is presumably attributable to an antiatherosclerotic effect (1,3).

Are there risks or side effects?

  • Raw plants are toxic: Unprocessed parts of the horse chestnut are toxic because of other constituents and are not suitable for consumption.
  • Medicinal use: Pure esculin is used in standardized preparations. When applied properly, it is considered safe.
  • Overdose: In high doses, gastrointestinal complaints or headaches could occur.
  • Medical supervision: Intake should take place under medical supervision.
