Edaravone
Edaravone is a synthetic molecule from the group of free radical scavengers (antioxidants) that has been under development since the late 1980s. Chemically, it is a substituted phenol derivative that is capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus reducing oxidative stress. This mechanism makes the active compound interesting for diseases in which oxidative stress and neurodegenerative processes play a role.
Edaravone gained its clinical significance particularly in Japan, where it has been approved for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke since 2001. It was later also used for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and was approved by the US FDA for this indication in 2017. This makes Edaravone one of the few approved drugs in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.
What health benefits does Edaravone offer?
The therapeutic benefits of Edaravone are essentially based on its antioxidant effect. There are mixed results regarding the efficacy of Edaravone. However, studies and clinical applications partly point to the following potential benefits:
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): Edaravone can slow the progression of the disease in ALS and keep patients' functional status stable for longer. Studies suggest a slower decline in the ALSFRS-R score (a measure of functional ability) and improved survival rates in patients treated with Edaravone compared to the control group (1,2).
- Stroke therapy: In Japan, the active compound is used in acute ischemic stroke to reduce secondary neurological damage. Studies support this application (3).
How does Edaravone work in the body?
Edaravone acts as a radical scavenger by neutralizing oxygen radicals. This potentially inhibits oxidative processes that occur in various health problems. In this way, the active compound could contribute to the stabilization of nerve cells and vascular structures (1).
Are there any risks or side effects?
- Side effects: Various side effects occur in studies. Among others, headaches, eczema, fatigue, breathing difficulties, muscle weakness, dyspnea, constipation, and dysphagia can occur. It should be noted here that different side effects were observed depending on pre-existing conditions or the type of administration (4,5).
- Administration: Edaravone is administered intravenously or orally; in either case, medical supervision is necessary.
Conclusion
Edaravone is a radical-scavenging antioxidant with a specific field of application in stroke and ALS therapy. While clinical experience in Japan has been established for decades, interest is also growing internationally. Despite mixed results, research remains active, particularly with regard to long-term efficacy, safety, and possible areas of application in other neurodegenerative diseases. More studies are necessary before conclusive statements about its effects and efficacy can be made.
