Calamus Draco

Calamus draco, also known as Daemonorops draco, dragon palm, or dragon rattan, is a palm-like climbing plant from Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia. It belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae). It is known above all for its resin-like secretion, the so-called “dragon's blood” – a bright red resin obtained from the fruit surfaces of the plant. This resin has a long tradition in folk medicine, incense making, alchemy, and natural cosmetics.

Although the term “dragon's blood” is used for several plant species, the dragon's blood from Daemonorops draco is one of the highest-quality and best-known. It is traditionally used for wound healing, for skin conditions, for ritual purposes, and as a natural dye.

What Benefits Does Dragon's Blood Offer?

The resin of Calamus draco is considered versatile in its uses in naturopathy. Here too, more research is needed to be able to reliably describe the risks and side effects. However, conceivable complications and things to keep in mind would include:

  • Skin reactions: With sensitive skin, isolated irritation or redness can occur.

  • Internal use: Oral intake should be avoided, as the systemic effects have hardly been researched.

  • Product purity: It is important that the resin comes from controlled sources, as diluted or contaminated products are also in circulation.
