What is betaine hydrochloride?
Betainehydrochloride is a chemical substance that is produced in the laboratory and used as a medicine.
Betainehydrochloride has an interesting history. In the past, betaine hydrochloride was included in over-the-counter medications as a digestive aid and to support stomach acid. Later, the use of betaine hydrochloride in over-the-counter medications was banned in some countries because not enough was known about the effectiveness and safety of this ingredient. Regardless of this, however, betaine hydrochloride is still available in most of these countries as a dietary supplement of varying purity and strength. Manufacturers of betaine hydrochloride supplements claim that some diseases are due to insufficient stomach acid production, but this claim has not been scientifically proven. However, even if this were the case, betaine hydrochloride itself would not help, as this compound only provides hydrochloric acid but does not change the acidity of the stomach. Betaine hydrochloride is also used to treat abnormally low potassium levels, hay fever, anemia, asthma, arteriosclerosis, yeast infections, diarrhea, food allergies, gallstones, inner ear infections, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid disorders. It is also used to protect the liver. Betaine hydrochloride should not be confused with betaine anhydrous. Betaine anhydrous is used to reduce high levels of homocysteine in the urine.
How does betaine hydrochloride work?
It is not known how betaine hydrochloride might work.
How effective is betaine hydrochloride?
There is not enough scientific data to say how effective betaine hydrochloride is for treating low potassium levels, anemia, asthma, arteriosclerosis, yeast infections, diarrhea, food allergies, gallstones, inner ear infections, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid disorders, or when used to protect the liver.
Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of betaine hydrochloride in these applications.
Safety and side effects
There is insufficient information to assess whether betaine hydrochloride is safe and harmless. Betaine hydrochloride may cause heartburn.
Precautions and warnings
Pregnancy and lactation: Not enough is known about the use of betaine hydrochloride during pregnancy and lactation. For this reason, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid betaine hydrochloride.
Stomach ulcers: There are concerns that the hydrochloric acid produced in the body from betaine hydrochloride could irritate stomach ulcers and prevent them from healing.
Interactions
At this time, there is no information on interactions of betaine hydrochloride.
Dosage
An appropriate dosage of betaine hydrochloride depends on various factors such as age, state of health and others. At this time, there is insufficient scientific data to make a statement about appropriate dosage ranges for betaine hydrochloride. For this reason, you should follow the dosage instructions on the label and/or consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
