What Is Babassu Oil?

Babassu Oil is obtained from the seeds of the babassu palm (Attalea speciosa), which is native to the tropical regions of Brazil – especially the savannas and rainforests of the Amazon region. The palm belongs to the family Arecaceae (palm family) and has been of central importance to the indigenous population for centuries – both as a food source and in traditional medicine and cosmetics. The oil obtained from the nut-like kernels resembles the better-known coconut oil in consistency and use but has a somewhat different fatty acid profile. It is solid to semi-solid at room temperature, has a light color, and a mild, nutty scent. Babassu Oil is characterized by a high proportion of saturated fatty acids, especially lauric and myristic acid – both compounds that are also used in skin care and nutrition. Due to its versatile properties, Babassu Oil is today not only used traditionally but is also gaining increasing international importance in natural cosmetics, the food industry, and herbal medicine.

What Benefits Does Babassu Oil Offer for Health?

The potential benefits of Babassu Oil are diverse but not yet sufficiently supported by clinical studies. Initial research findings and traditional knowledge point to the following health-related properties:

  • Rich in lauric acid: Lauric acid possesses antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties that could have positive effects both when applied externally to the skin and when taken internally (1,2,3,4).
  • Skin-caring and anti-inflammatory: Babassu Oil is traditionally used to soothe irritated or dry skin. Studies confirm possible anti-inflammatory effects with topical application (1,2,5).

How Does Babassu Oil Work in the Body?

The mode of action of Babassu Oil is based primarily on its high content of medium-chain fatty acids, above all lauric acid. In studies, this fatty acid acted antimicrobially and could support the skin barrier and cell functions. In addition, the oil contains small amounts of antioxidant components that could modulate oxidative processes in the body.
