What is Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2, which is also known as menaquinone, belongs together with vitamin K1 to a group of fat-soluble vitamins, which is known as vitamin K. Vitamin K2 is by far the most active vitamin in this group and is exclusively responsible for many of the positive effects of K vitamins.

There are several variants of vitamin K2, including animal-derived menaquinone-4 and plant-derived menaquinone-7. For GN Health Line Vitamin K2, we only use menaquinone-7 derived from non-GMO soybeans and because of this GN Health Line Vitamin K2 is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Vitamin K2 plays important roles in various vital body processes, including healthy blood clotting and the activation of GLA proteins, which play key roles in the body's calcium metabolism.

Even though a healthy function of your calcium metabolism may not sound very exciting at first sight, it will lead to a better cardiovascular health by reducing arteriosclerosis and maintaining blood vessels elasticity, and will help to maintain healthy bones and teeth and to prevent osteoporosis. In addition, according to scientific studies, vitamin K2 may also reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and could significantly reduce the risk of diabetes. What are the Symptoms of a Vitamin K2 Deficiency and what are the Consequences?

A vitamin K2 deficiency can arise quite quickly if you do not eat a perfectly balanced diet. This is - amongst other things - related to the fact that even the best natural vitamin K sources such as meat, organ meat, egg yolks, quark and certain cheeses that are subject to a bacterial ripening process, only contain small amounts of vitamin K2. It is therefore not surprising that health experts assume a very wide spread vitamin K2 deficiency.

The treachery of a vitamin K2 deficiency is that it will often only become noticeable very late, when strong and sometimes irreparable damage already has occurred. This is related to the fact that vitamin K2 is involved in many long-term processes and that the diseases that are a result of a vitamin K2 deficiency such as osteoporosis or atherosclerosis will only become noticeable at their terminal stage when successful treatment is difficult or even impossible. Initial evidence of a vitamin K deficiency includes an increased tendency for bruises, as well as unusually long post-injury bleeding, because a vitamin K deficiency inhibits blood coagulation.

Long term effects of a vitamin K2 deficiency include a greatly increased risk of osteoporosis, bone loss, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and kidney stones, to name only a few. The daily requirement for vitamin K2 is given as 65 to 80 μg per day. Vitamin K2 for healthy Bones and a Protection against Osteoporosis

Although most people will first think of vitamin D and calcium in the context of bone health, vitamin K2 is just as important. More specifically, you can still take as much vitamin D and calcium - without vitamin K2, both can not exert their effect on your bone structure.

To understand this, one must know that vitamin D stimulates the formation of osteocalcin, which is responsible for storing calcium in the bones. This osteocalcin, however, can only be activated by vitamin K2, and is ineffective without this vitamin. In other words, all calcium and vitamin D in the world will not be able to reduce osteoporosis and to help with a decrease in bone density if you have a vitamin K2 deficiency. Instead, your bones will become thin and fragile and the risk of fractures will increases over time

Scientific research has shown that vitamin K2 can increase strength and density of your bones and promote the development of collagen, which makes bones more elastic and protects against bone fractures. In fact, an evaluation of different studies has shown that vitamin K2 can reduce the risk of bones fractures by 60 to 80%.

When it comes to bone health, osteoporosis is also an important issue. We talk about osteoporosis when the natural bone loss that usually starts in your mid-30 exceeds 1 to 1.5% per year. Women are particularly affected after menopause, as they then have significantly less oestrogen, which promotes calcium storage in the bones. However, osteoporosis not only affects women. In Germany nearly 10 million people suffer from this disease.

Interestingly, scientific studies have shown that vitamin K2 levels in osteoporosis patients are up to 70% lower than in healthy individuals, and that a vitamin K2 deficiency leads to lower bone density and an increased risk of fractures (1). Another studio was able to show that vitamin K2 is able to prevent bone loss in osteoporosis patients and may even stimulate bone formation (2).

Vitamin K2 to promote Cardiovascular Health and to protect against Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis, also known as calcification of the veins, is a degenerative alteration of veins and coronary arteries, which progresses slowly over many years or even decades and is responsible for numerous cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, heart attack and stroke. Alarmingly, more than 50% of all deaths in our Western civilization are attributable to cardiovascular diseases. The treachery of atherosclerosis is that its symptoms become noticeable only at a very advanced stage due to narrowing of blood vessels or vascular occlusions, when cardiovascular health is already severely impaired.

Arteriosclerosis develops when tiny cracks develop on the inner walls of the arteries due to a rising blood pressure and when these cracks are stuffed by the body with LDL cholesterol due to a lack of important nutrients, which binds calcium. By removing excess calcium from the blood, vitamin K2 can significantly reduce dangerous calcium deposits (3).

The best-known study is the so-called Rotterdam Heart Study, which investigated the relationship between the amount of vitamin K2 consumed and arteriosclerosis (4). This study found out that people with a higher intake of vitamin K2 had significantly fewer calcium deposits in their arteries, and that a sufficient intake of vitamin K2 could reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis or death from cardiovascular disease by 50%.

It is likely that the effects of vitamin K2 could be much more far-reaching. Animal studies have shown that vitamin K2 was able to reverse an artificially induced vein calcification and to reduce calcium deposits by 50% (5).

A calcification of the veins also causes the walls of the blood vessels to stiffen, which can cause further micro cracks in the area of the inner walls of the veins with all their negative consequences. An interesting study, conducted with 244 postmenopausal women over a 3-year period (6), clearly demonstrated that vitamin K2 can improve the elasticity of blood vessels, even with existing vascular stiffening. Vitamin K2 can thus also bring about a significant improvement of the elasticity of blood vessels

Vitamin K2 as a Protection against Cancer

Although scientific research of this topic is still in its infancy, there is strong evidence that vitamin K2 could protect against cancer by activating the self-destruction mechanism of cancer cells. This has already been demonstrated in leukaemia cells by an in vitro study (7).

In addition to these more theoretical studies, there are also studies conducted with humans that show that vitamin K2 can protect against cancer (8). A study conducted with subjects that possessed an increased risk of liver cancer showed that only 10% of the subjects who supplemented vitamin K2, but 47% of control subjects, developed liver cancer during the study period. This means that vitamin K2 has reduced the risk of cancer by almost 80%, which is quite a dramatic reduction in cancer risk.

But vitamin K2 not only seems to be able to protect against cancer, but may also have a positive effect on existing cancer. A study conducted in Heidelberg, that was published in the prestigious American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found out that vitamin K2 can reduce the risk of death in cancer patients by 30% (9).

Vitamin K2 for a Reduction of the Risk to develop Diabetes Type 2

A study conducted in the Netherlands in 2010 concluded that there is a direct link between vitamin K2 intake and the risk to develop type 2 diabetes (10). This study analyzed the diet of nearly 40,000 participants for its vitamin K2 content.

An almost linear relationship between vitamin K2 intake and diabetes risk was observed. A detailed analysis of the results showed that any increase in vitamin K2 intake by 10µg per day reduces the diabetes risk by 7%.

In addition, a higher vitamin K2 intake was also connected with improved blood lipid levels and lower levels of C-reactive proteins that serve as markers of inflammation. This suggests that vitamin K2 could reduce inflammation in the body. In fact, a reduction of inflammation by vitamin K2 is thought to be responsible for improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Suggested Use: Take one capsule of vitamin K2 after a meal that contains some fat. Due to the fact that vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin, some dietary fat is needed for an adequate absorption by the body.

Warning: If you are taking blood-thinning medications, a vitamin K2 supplementation should be discussed in advance with the attending physician as vitamin K2 aids in healthy blood clotting. It is possible that the medication needs to be adjusted.
