Why is a healthy and restful sleep so important?

By now even the last strength athlete and bodybuilder should be aware of the following: during intense and brutal workouts in the gym, we only set a stimulus for gains of strength and new muscle mass. The actual growth will take place when we rest and recover from our workouts. In other words, this means that without sufficient rest and recovery, there can be no increase in mass and strength. How seriously athletes take their recovery is shown by the fact that hardly any strength athlete or bodybuilder would even think about giving up his post-workout shake or subsequent protein meals.

Unfortunately, most people overlook the fact that a healthy and restful sleep is just as important for a quick and complete recovery. During sleep, when our body is at rest, the most important repairs take place and without those repairs no increase in strength or muscle mass would be possible. And without a good night's sleep, we will not be able to perform at our maximum during our next workout to maximize gains of strength and muscle mass.

With our hectic lifestyle, adequate sleep is no more than a dream for most of us. We renounce sleep because we have so much to do or are afraid of missing out on something. We even try to eliminate our fatigue with the help of coffee or more aggressive stimulants. And because of the stress many of us are exposed to, the quality of the little sleep, we get, is far less than optimal.

If you want to achieve maximum gains and build the body of your dreams, you can not go on like this! Since there are countless committed and potentially successful strength athletes and bodybuilders wasting a lot of their time in the gym, as they do not get enough restful sleep and rest for optimal gains in strength and muscle mass, we got down to work and developed a sleep product that will help you to reach your full potential, while at the same time being more alert, rested and productive in your daily life.

The result of our efforts is Sleeper - the most complete sleep and recovery supplement that has ever left our lab. Sleeper will help you fall asleep faster and sleep better with the power of natural and safe ingredients. At the same time, Sleeper will help you to have a deeper and more restful sleep, which means that you can achieve maximum rest and recovery with less sleep in order to maximize your growth and performance in the gym, at work and in your daily life.

But we would not be GN Laboratories if Sleeper was "just" a sleep support product. That's why we have chosen ingredients that will not only promote a healthy and restorative sleep, but also actively support your recovery and muscle growth by using a variety of different biological pathways. These pathways include an increase of the natural secretion of your body's own anabolic and recovery promoting hormones. In men, these ingredients also counteract a stress-related reduction in levels of muscle building hormones. In addition to this, Sleeper can reduce increased catabolic cortisol levels caused by intensive workouts and/or stress, thereby creating an anabolic, recovery promoting, and muscle mass and strength building environment in your body, ultimately leading to a faster recovery and faster gains. And as an added bonus, Sleeper can not only relax your mind but your hard pressed muscles as well, alleviating workout related muscle pain and potential muscle soreness to help you to get ready for your next gruelling workout faster.

If you want to speed up your recovery and optimize your performance while maximizing your strength and muscle gains, Sleeper is what you're looking for!

On which active ingredients is the unique effect of Sleeper based?

When developing Sleeper, we combined the most potent natural ingredients to support a healthy and restful sleep, with a special focus on active ingredients that also promote a rapid optimum recovery and maximum gains in muscle mass and strength through other mechanisms as well. It was also very important for us to combine active ingredients that work together synergistically and mutually reinforce each other in their effects.

It was particularly important to us that Sleeper contains only natural and safe ingredients, as the focus of this product is on supporting and promoting a natural, healthy sleep. In order to show you that these are not just the same old empty promises you may have become used to from other supplement manufacturers, we will take a look at each ingredient, including its proven effects in the following sections.

Ashwagandha root extract

Ashwagandha is a medicinal plant with adaptogene effects that has been used for centuries in the field of Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha has a calming, stress-reducing effect and a sleep-promoting effect. It is particularly interesting that Ashwagandha not only promotes falling asleep easier, but will also have a positive effect on the quality of your slow-wave sleep phases that are so important for your recovery and many other things.

Amongst other things, these beneficial effects on your sleep are due to the fact that active ingredients in Ashwagandha, known as withanolides, mimic the activity of a neurotransmitter in your brain, which reduces the activity of neurons and thus has a calming effect.

But Ashwagandha still has a whole host of other positive attributes that can boost and accelerate your recovery. Studies have shown that Ashwagandha can reduce elevated catabolic cortisol levels by up to 27%. This is especially important during recovery from hard and intense workouts that cause severe physical stress on your body and almost inevitably result in an increased cortisol release.

Ashwagandha can thus help you to get back to an anabolic, muscle building state faster. In addition, Ashwagandha can prevent a stress-related reduction in levels of muscle building hormones in men and significantly increase your natural production of muscle building hormones (3), resulting in a faster recovery and faster gains of muscle mass and strength.

This acceleration of recovery was demonstrated by clinical studies (3) conducted with athletes showing a reduction in creatine kinase levels, which are a marker of muscle damage.

L-Theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in tea and is not contained in any other food. From a chemical point of view, theanine is a derivative of the amino acid glutamine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and to exert its effects directly in the brain. In the human brain, l-theanine can increase the release of neurotransmitters, which - as shown in previous sections - all have positive effects on your sleep and your recovery after hard and intense workouts. L-theanine works together synergistically with many of the other ingredients of Sleeper and further enhances their effects. In addition, theanine has positive effects on the alpha waves in your brain that are so important during sleep. These alpha waves promote a restful relaxation and can significantly improve your sleep quality, which will results in an increased ability to concentrate on the following day, allowing you to focus better on your workout.

In addition, alpha waves inhibit the release of cortisol and other catabolic hormones and this can noticeably accelerate both your recovery and your muscle growth, as already mentioned several times.

L-theanine also helps reduce stress and promote relaxation, both of which can help you fall asleep. In addition to this, it reduces the stimulant effects of stimulants. The effects of L-theanine on promoting better sleep have been confirmed in numerous studies carried out with humans and animals (14).

L-Tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that occurs naturally in food and is needed by your body as a substrate for the production of a whole range of important neurotransmitters and hormones of your brain metabolism. Tryptophan is one of the few amino acids that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Once in the brain, tryptophan is used, among other things, to produce the neurotransmitter serotonin (6). Serotonin can not only improve your mood and help against depression, but also help to regulate a healthy sleep. Thus, it is not surprising that a tryptophan deficiency can result in sleep disorders, which can be effectively counteracted by an isolated administration of free tryptophan. Serotonin is also important for a healthy sleep, because it is the raw material from which the so-called sleep hormone melatonin, which is responsible for the regulation of the sleep-wake rhythm, is produced in your brain. An increase in your serotonin levels will also result in an increase in your melatonin levels, promoting a healthy and restful sleep. Melatonin not only promotes falling asleep, but also prolongs the REM and slow wave sleep phases that are so important for the recovery of your body (7, 8).

5-Hydroxytryptophan

5-hydroxytryptophan, better known by the acronym 5-HTP, is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan that occurs naturally in some food and is also the intermediate product formed during the synthesis of serotonin from tryptophan in your brain. 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier, and can be converted to serotonin or melatonin even faster and more easily than tryptophan, since it is one synthesis step closer to serotonin than tryptophan. How effective 5-HTP is in this regard is demonstrated by the fact that this compound was the drug of choice for the treatment of a serotonin deficiency in the medical field prior to the development of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. To date, 5-HTP is used in the medical field to treat sleep disorders, as it stimulates the natural melatonin production and promotes a healthy REM sleep (5, 6), which is so important for recovery, resulting in a shorter necessary sleep time and a better sleep quality. Essentially everything said before about tryptophan also applies to 5-HTP. However, 5-HTP can do far more to promote a faster and better recovery, as it directly affects the body's own production of a number of important hormones that play important roles during recovery and muscle building. Scientific studies conducted with athletes found out that 5-HTP will promote your recovery and will thus enable you to perform more frequent and intensive workouts. In addition to increasing the body's own production of muscle building hormones, 5-HTP can also increase your levels of IGF-1, which is the most anabolic endogenous growth factor of your body. In addition, 5-HTP can stimulate the formation of satellite cells that fuse with muscle cells to promote and accelerate recovery and muscle growth.

Of particular interest is the fact that 5-HTP promotes the formation of endogenous follistatin. Follistatin is an endogenous myostatin inhibitor that inhibits the formation of myostatin. It is known that myostatin acts as a kind of natural brake for your muscle growth that a complete blockade of this inhibitor would allow for virtually unlimited muscle growth without natural genetic limits. Of course, 5-HTP does not go that far, but already a little less myostatin can work wonders when it comes to a better recovery and faster muscle growth.

We should probably mention that a combination of GABA and 5-HTP has been proven to be particularly effective in improving sleep quality, accelerating recovery, and promoting faster gains, as these two compounds are synergistically reinforcing each other in their effects.

Melatonin

Melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland in the brain, is the natural "sleep hormone" of the human body. Melatonin is released primarily in the evening and is responsible for regulating the body's biological clock and the sleep-wake cycle. Sleep problems in general - and especially problems falling asleep - are often caused by an inadequate natural melatonin production, for which there may be numerous reasons. In addition to an age-related decrease of your natural melatonin production, other factors including stress, illnesses or trivial triggers like too much light in the evening may lead to an inadequate melatonin production.

Melatonin has been shown in numerous studies that it can help you fall asleep. It not only reduces the time it takes to fall asleep, but can also significantly improve your sleep quality (9, 10).

Another bonus is that melatonin can reduce the negative symptoms of jet lag by getting the body’s internal clock back on track (11, 12). The latter applies not only to jet lag, but also to shift workers, for whom it can help to cope better with the constantly changing bedtime.

A Combination of compounds like 5-HTP and tryptophan that support your body’s natural melatonin production, and a low dosage of melatonin have been found to be the most effective way to alleviate sleep problems associated with an inadequate endogenous melatonin production.

Cannabis Sativa

Cannabis Sativa, also known as the hemp plant, is a natural source of cannabinoids, which are known to be the active ingredient in CBD oil. These cannabinoids interact with the body's cannabinoid receptors, which regulate the body's endocannabinoid system. In addition to appetite, mood and pain, this system also regulates sleep.

By interacting with the cannabinoid receptors, CBD can also relieve stress and lower blood pressure by relaxing the veins, both of which can have a positive effect on sleep. In fact, studies have found that cannabinoids, such as those found in Cannabis Sativa, can help with sleep problems and improve sleep quality (15, 16).

St. John's Wort Extract

St. John's Wort is primarily known as a natural remedy for treating depression and anxiety. What is less well known is that St. John's Wort can also have positive effects on your sleep. The mechanisms presumably responsible for this include a stimulation of the GABA receptor - a key pathway for sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain - and a stimulation of your body’s serotonin production, both of which can promote a better sleep.

In addition, studies suggest that St. John's Wort can extend the duration of deep sleep by delaying REM sleep (17, 18). Deep sleep is the phase of sleep that is most important for your physical and mental recovery, which in other words means that your sleep will become more restful and that your recovery will be promoted.

Warnings: Both melatonin and St. John's wort can interact with certain drugs and increase or reduce their effects, which can lead to undesirable side effects and risks. Please discuss the use of Sleeper with your doctor in advance if you are taking prescription or non-prescription medication. Slepper should never be combined with antidepressants, birth control pills, sedatives or blood thinners.
