5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid that naturally occurs in the human body as an intermediate during the serotonin synthesis from the amino acid tryptophan. 5-HTP is the direct precursor of serotonin and is only one synthesis step away from serotonin. Scientific studies have shown that a 5-HTP supplementation can significantly increase the serotonin levels in the brain - especially in people with already low serotonin levels.
When it comes to increasing the natural serotonin production in the brain, a 5-HTP supplementation is significantly superior to the use of tryptophan since 5-HTP is a synthesis step closer to serotonin. In addition, 5-HTP can pass the blood-brain barrier unhindered, while tryptophan must compete with other amino acids for the absorption into the brain and can only overcome the blood-brain barrier in limited amounts.
We do not use synthetically produced 5-HTP, but an extract of Griffonia Simplicifolia, which is the most concentrated source of natural 5-HTP. The extract we use is characterized by an extremely high 5-HTP content of 98% and thus consists almost exclusively of pure, natural 5-HTP.
A low serotonin production in the brain is unfortunately very widespread for various reasons, including stress, insufficient exercise and an unhealthy diet. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter that is required for well-being, the regulation of appetite and a healthy, restful sleep.
Low serotonin levels are associated with a number of problems including insomnia, bad sleep, depressions, anxiety, migraine, headaches, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, impaired mood and impaired general well-being, carbohydrate cravings, obesity, and reduced mental and physical performance.
As 5-HTP increases the natural serotonin production in the brain, it is not surprising that countless scientific studies and user reports show that this amino acid can effectively help to alleviate all these problems - and many more.
About 30% of the population suffer from insomnia and other sleep problems that can severely affect a good night's sleep. Medicines or the over-the-counter supplement like melatonin are frequently used to treat these kinds of sleep problems. But these products have serious disadvantages, which include a disturbance of the natural sleeping patterns. In addition, these agents can lead to fatigue during the day and can make getting up in the morning harder.
5-HTP acts in a healthier and more tolerable way, as it stimulates the natural melatonin production of the human body, resulting in a longer REM phase and a longer deep sleep phase, which are the two most important sleep phases for recovery and relaxation. This results in a deeper and more restful sleep without increasing the time you sleep, which means that you can recover better at night without spending more time in bed.
Scientific studies have shown that the duration of the REM sleep, which is also referred to as dream phase, is dose-dependent and that a higher 5-HTP dose results in a longer REM sleep phase. Further studies have also shown that 5-HTP is more efficient than melatonin, when it comes to the treatment of sleep problems.
A depression is often the result of a disturbance of the brain metabolism and resulting low serotonin levels. In the medical field, so-called serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which can increase the serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting the degradation of serotonin, are often used for the treatment of depression.
Scientific studies have shown that 5-HTP can produce effects similar to serotonin reuptake inhibitors via an increase of the natural serotonin production. This resulted in a significant alleviation of depression in 60 to 70% of the test subjects within a few weeks. Some of these studies conclude that the effects of 5-HTP are comparable to the effects of serotonin reuptake inhibitors. With 5-HTP, a faster onset of action was observed, while it is free from the undesirable side effects associated with many serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Interestingly a combination of 5-HTP with the amino acid L-tyrosine appears to further enhance the effect in the treatment of depression.
Chronic headaches and migraine are often caused by low serotonin levels in the brain. It is therefore not surprising that different scientific studies have concluded that a long time 5-HTP treatment could significantly reduce the severity and frequency of pain in 77-93% of subjects suffering from migraine and chronic headaches. In the treatment of acute headaches a significant pain relief was observed in over 70% of the subjects.
Various effects of increased serotonin levels caused by 5-HTP are responsible for this. Since serotonin causes a constriction of the blood vessels in the human brain, it can prevent so-called vascular headaches, which are a result of an excessive dilation of the blood vessels in the brain.
In addition, serotonin has a positive effect on the natural release of endorphins that are known as the natural painkillers of the human body. The higher your serotonin levels are in the brain, the less vulnerable you are to pain of all kinds.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic, often therapy-resistant disease that is characterized by muscles pain, joint pain, back pain and pressure pain, and often also includes symptoms like morning stiffness, sleep problems, swelling of extremities and face, as well as concentration problems, fatigue and a lack of motivation and drive.
In the case of fibromyalgia, 5-HTP can also lead to a marked alleviation of the symptoms and an improvement of the general well-being. These effects are attributable to the increased release of pain-relieving endorphins caused by serotonin, while the fatigue and the reduced motivation and drive that are associated with fibromyalgia, are alleviated by promoting a more restful and deeper sleep.
Anyone who has ever endured a calorie-reduced diet, knows, that cravings for sweets and carbohydrates can hinder weight loss and fat loss significantly. These cravings can be attributed to low serotonin levels in the brain.
By supplementing with 5-HTP during a diet, the serotonin levels in the brain can be increased and cravings for carbohydrates can be prevented. In addition, 5-HTP appears to act as a natural appetite inhibitor when taken before the main meals, which reduces the cravings for carbohydrates. 5-HTP also promotes the feeling of satiety and produces a sense of satisfaction after eating.
Numerous scientific studies showed a greater weight reduction in subjects supplementing with 5-HTP. This decrease in weight was usually attributable to the fact that users of 5-HTP spontaneously ate less than subjects, who received only a placebo.
For different goals different optimal 5-HTP intake schemes are optimal. We would like to briefly address these different intake schemes.
Since 5-HTP uses other transport routes than tryptophan for overcoming the blood-brain barrier and does not have to compete with other amino acids for an uptake into the brain, 5-HTP can also be taken with meals.
Warnings: If you are treated for of sleep disorders, depression, migraine or fibromyalgia, you should discuss the use of 5-HTP with your doctor. Even so 5-HTP usually shows good results in the treatment of these ailments and problems, you should never change or suspend your previous medication without consultation with your doctor.
Recommended daily intake: take 1-2 capsule without chewing and with sufficient liquid

| Text: Da ich eine naschkatze bin habe ich in der Diät immer wieder Heißhunger und werde schwach. Seit 1 Woche nehme ich die Kapseln vor dem essen und muss sagen - Ich bin endlich stark geblieben, kein verlangen nach Süßigkeiten. |
Zum Thema schlafen - ich kann damit nicht gut schlafen, leider bin eher öfter wach. Sonst prima in der Diät!
