What is boron?

Boron is an essential trace element that has to be supplied daily by food or in the form of supplements (5). Even though science is not yet aware of all the functions of boron in the human body, boron appears to be involved in a number of body processes, including positive effects on brain activity, calcium metabolism, bone metabolism, production of steroid hormones, vitamin D metabolism and a reduction of joint complaints. (7, 8, 9, 10).

Deficiency symptoms may include hormonal imbalances involving male and female sex hormones, a reduced immune function, an increased risk of osteoporosis and arthritis of the joints, a reduced physical and mental performance, muscle weakness, and skin disorders including acne and eczema. In addition, an insufficient boron intake appears to reduce blood levels of vitamin D.

What are the benefits of supplementing with GN Boron?

A supplementation with GN Boron can have a number of benefits that are based on ensuring a healthy and sufficient supply of boron, and a related prevention of a boron deficiency.

Although earlier claims that boron can dramatically increase the levels of muscle-building androgenic hormones have turned out to be excessive, boron is still involved in the body's natural production of male and female sex hormones and appears to be important for a balanced and optimal production of these hormones (12, 13).

It has also been shown that a boron supplementation can lower estrogen levels and significantly increase levels of free - and thus active - androgenic muscle-building hormones in healthy young men (11), while at the same time reducing levels of inflammatory markers, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect of boron.

In addition to supporting a good physical performance, a higher intake of boron appears to have positive effects on cognitive function, concentration, motor skills and memory (14).

Since boron both plays a role in the integration of calcium into the articular cartilage and inhibits the degradation of hyaluronic acid, which is an important component of the articular cartilage and the synovial fluid, it is not surprising that a boron supplementation can slow down the development of arthritic joint problems and may even alleviate existing joint pain (15).

In addition, boron can help maintain healthy and stable bones and counteract osteoporosis by reducing an increased excretion of important minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus (16) and supporting production and use of vitamin D in your body. Animal studies have even shown that a boron supplementation could increase bone formation, bone mass and bone volume and thus may directly contribute to the formation of stronger bones (17).

One of the most common uses of boron in the form of sodium borate is to activate the pineal gland. The pineal gland is an endocrine gland located in the diencephalon that is responsible for the production and secretion of the hormone melatonin, which regulates your sleep. With increasing age, the pineal gland becomes increasingly calcified (1, 2). Such a calcification is associated with an impaired melatonin production with all its negative effects on health and sleep, as well as an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.

A calcification of the pineal gland is attributed to fluorides (3). Therefore some health experts regard a removal of excess fluoride as a suitable measure to prevent and reduce a calcification of the pineal gland. Clinical studies have shown that sodium borate is well suited for such an excretion of excessive amounts of fluoride (4).
