Zinc is an essential mineral for your body, which in other words means that your body can not function properly without zinc, as zinc is an important component of over 300 vital enzymes in your body. Zinc is also needed for wound healing, a proper immune function, protein synthesis, protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, the production of important anabolic hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone, insulin and thyroid hormones, cell growth and cell division.
Without sufficient amounts of zinc all these important bodily functions are compromised.
The average diet often does not provide sufficient levels of zinc to optimally cover your daily requirement, and vegetarians show an even higher risk, because many dietary sources of zinc are of animal origin. To make matters worse, athletes who exercise intensively, usually have increased zinc requirements, which are difficult to cover by food alone. A lack of zinc can lead to numerous deficiency symptoms, which include weakness, difficulties concentrating, a reduced immune function, night blindness, taste and smell disorders, delayed wound healing, brittle fingernails, hair loss, reduced testosterone levels, and stretch marks during rapid muscle growth.
Bodybuilders and strength athletes often report of an accelerated recovery between workouts when they use a zinc supplementation, which may be due to the fact that zinc is needed to repair exercise-induced microtraumata and to regulate proper testosterone levels. For strength athletes who use aromatizing anabolic steroids that are converted to oestrogen derivates by the aromatase enzyme, it may also be interesting that zinc can block the aromatase enzyme at a dosage of 75 to 150 mg per day. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of testosterone and other steroids into 0estrogen. In this context, however, it is important to consider the fact that zinc accumulates in the human body and that high zinc doses inhibit the uptake of copper. Therefore high amounts of zinc should only be used for a short period of time.
Adults take one (1) capsule daily with food.
