What is a pomegranate peel extract?

The pomegranate is known for its fruity taste as well as its numerous health benefits. Most people see only the pulp, the seeds and the juice of this fruit and overlook the fact that the peel of the pomegranate contains significantly larger amounts of natural, health-promoting plant nutrients. The pomegranate peel contains a high content of phenolic compounds such as caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and p-coumaric acid, as well as 12 different forms of ellagic acid. Other active ingredients include hydroxybenzoic acids, anthocyanidins and flavonoids such as kaempferol, luteolin and quercitin, as well as catechins with well known health benefits. In addition, pomegranate peel is particularly rich in natural vitamin C.

In the field of traditional ayurvedic medicine, pomegranate peel has been used for thousands of years to treat numerous diseases and conditions including swelling, anaemia, diarrhoea, worm infestation, dysentery and heart diseases.

What are the health benefits of our pomegranate peel extract?

A high quality pomegranate peel extract, like the one we use, is one of the most efficient sources of a variety of antioxidants that are found in the peel of this fruit in far greater quantities than in the juice or the pulp. These antioxidants, which include the different types of ellagic acid that make up 40% of our extract, can protect your body, its organs, its cells, and its DNA from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Elevated levels of free radicals, for which there may be many reasons like an unhealthy diet, environmental toxins, and even intense physical efforts during hard workouts, have been linked to the development of many diseases including cancer, arthritis, and Parkinson's. Free radicals are even considered to be the main cause of premature aging of the human body. Reducing the levels of free radicals with an antioxidant-rich pomegranate peel extract can therefore reduce the risk of many diseases and even slow down the aging process.

These antioxidant effects may also reduce the risk of cancer since free radical damage of body cells is considered to be one of the possible causes of various cancers. A pomegranate peel extract containing high levels of ellagic acid may also slow down the progression of breast cancer and prostate cancer by another mechanism. Ellagic acid has been shown be an effective inhibitor of the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to oestrogen. An inhibition of the aromatase enzyme results in a reduced conversion of testosterone to oestrogen and thus lower oestrogen levels, which may slow down the growth of hormone-sensitive tumours in breast cancer and prostate cancer. In prostate cancer patients a daily consume of pomegranate juice, which is rich in ellagic acid, has been shown to slowdown an increase of PSA levels, which are a marker of the progression of prostate cancer. The pomegranate peel extract we use is standardized to an extremely high content of 40% ellagic acid and should thus develop a strong aromatase-inhibiting effect. There are also a number of studies indicating that a pomegranate peel extract could have beneficial effects on bladder cancer, leukaemia and skin cancer.

A reduction of the activity of the aromatase enzyme may also be beneficial for healthy men, as a reduced conversion of testosterone to oestrogen results in higher levels of testosterone - and which man would not benefit from a little more testosterone, which is especially true for strength athletes. In addition, an aromatase inhibitory effect may reduce the undesirable side effects of oestrogens, which may be beneficial for users of prohormones or anabolic steroids, as well as for men with an excessive natural endogenous oestrogen production.

A pomegranate peel extract is also known for its cardiovascular protective effects. It has been shown that this extract can lower the levels of unhealthy LDL cholesterol while the contained antioxidants protect LDL cholesterol from an oxidation, which results in a reduced risk of heart diseases. A reduction in elevated blood pressure values was also observed In addition, a pomegranate peel extract has antibacterial effects and can significantly improve your immune function while at the same time producing pronounced anti-inflammatory effects due to the contained tannins. A pomegranate peel extract can reduce inflammations of the digestive organs, improve digestion, stop normal and bloody diarrhoea, relieve gastric ulcers, and reduce swellings of haemorrhoids.

In addition, scientific studies have shown that a pomegranate peel extract possesses hepatoprotective effects and can significantly improve liver function readings in case of fibrosis, while at the same time improving the structure and function of your liver. In post-menopausal women, a pomegranate peel extract can improve bone health and prevent a development of osteoporosis. Other diseases in which a pomegranate peel extract has been shown to have a beneficial effect include Alzheimer's and diabetes. In case of diabetes a pomegranate peel extract will not only lower blood sugar levels and increase activity and number of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells, but also counteract diabetes related co morbidities.
