What is betaine

Betaine is an amino acid that is naturally occurring in some foods such as beets, quinoa, spinach, and wheat germ. It is used by these plants to protect their cells from stress and strain. In the medical field betaine has been used for decades to support cardiovascular health, to relieve and detoxify the liver, to promote a healthy digestion and much more.

Recent research has also shown that betaine possesses a number of benefits for hard-training athletes, bodybuilders and figure-conscious individuals. This includes positive effects on exercise performance, muscle gains and fat loss. For this reason, many reputable scientists already see Betaine as a supplement that faces a great future in the field of sports supplementation.

What are the advantages of betaine for hard-training athletes and bodybuilders?

If you look at the human studies conducted with trained athletes, it quickly becomes obvious that betaine has an enormous potential. These studies have shown that betaine can significantly increase muscle strength and endurance in both strength and endurance athletes (7, 8). At the same time it can greatly accelerate your gains of muscle mass and your fat loss (9).

There are a number of possible reasons for these effects. Several studies have shown that betaine can significantly increase the natural anabolic hormonal response to weight training while decreasing catabolic cortisol levels post-exercise (10, 11).

In addition, betaine will increases the conversion of harmful homocysteine to the amino acid methionine, resulting in higher levels of methionine. More methionine will not only promotes your body's own creatine synthesis, but also plays an important role in muscle protein synthesis. Lower levels of homocysteine are also of interest because Homocystein can inhibit insulin signaling, which can hamper both fat loss and muscle building.

With which supplements should Betaine be combined with?

Betaine works together synergistically with many other ingredients traditionally used to support muscle pump, exercise performance, and gains of mass and strength, resulting in an overall effect that far exceeds the sum of the individual effects. Betaine can particularly well be combined with GN Creatine Polyhydrate, GN Pure German Creapure, GN Pure German Beta AlanineGN Pure German Citrulline Malate and GN Citrulline Polyhydrate, as well as most Pre-Workout Boosters.

What are the health benefits of Betaine

Amongst other things, betaine can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease as it can lower both cholesterol levels (1) and homocysteine levels (2). High levels of homocysteine are considered dangerous, because they promote the formation of plaques in your blood vessels, which can lead to arteriosclerosis and heart attacks (3).

In addition, betaine promotes a healthy liver by stimulating the breakdown of fatty acids in the liver (4), which can prevent the development of a fatty liver and even promote and support the regeneration of a damaged liver (5).

Other medical uses include a digestive support, as betaine can increase your gastric acid levels and thereby improve the digestion and utilization of protein and other nutrients (6). Betaine can also increase the SAMe levels in your body (12), which can have a positive effect on your mood, promote your liver health and positively influence your joint regeneration.

How and when should you take Betaine?

The optimal dosage of betaine seems to depend on the purpose of use. Studies indicate the following dosages:

  • Reduction of homocysteine levels: at least 500 mg per day
  • Support of a healthy liver function: at least 500 mg per day
  • Accompanying treatment of diseases of the liver: 1000 to 2000 mg three times a day
  • Digestive support: 650 to 2000 mg per day
  • Increased athletic performance, faster gains of muscle mass and accelerated fat loss: 2500 to 6000 mg per day

Because betaine can promote your body’s protein synthesis and reduce catabolic cortisol levels, is should be used both before and after exercise for maximum results. Betaine should also be used on rest days. A cyclical application is not necessary as the beneficial effects of betaine do not diminish over time and because betaine is completely safe.

If you belong to the few people that may suffer of a mild stomach upset caused by betaine, it is best to divide your daily dose into several smaller single doses.
